I'm doing some research for my next buy and want to know if anyone knows, What is the range on the SKS while still being accurate? How many round can you go through before the barrel is to hot to be accurate? I would like to do some long range target shooting. :sniper::HFU:

Dont think the sks is the rifle you should be looking at for accurate long range
What would you recommend? I'm still looking so I'm open to options. But the cost is important. I'd like to keep it around the same cost as an SKS with a new stock.

So would I. But long range shooting people usually use expensive kit.
You could get a bolt-action milsurp after scoring some bulk ammo, or handload. That would give you better accuracy per buck.
You could even place a add in the EE, WTB a bolt action rifle for $300.

What is long range for you?

The SKS is a great gun, but as the previous posts mentioned it isn't a "long range" gun and neither is the round it shoots.

Get a Mosin Nagant. Very inexpensive bolt action, cheaper than SKS in most cases - about $170. I may buy one myself soon. These rifles are very reliable and accurate, and the milsurp ammo is a good deal too.

I couldn't tell you what kind of range you could get with one, but I'm sure someone here would know. Not the prettiest rifle out there (subjective opinion), but a tried and true design that has a lot of history.

X3. Some members on CGN have claimed 300-500yds ringing gongs IIRC. I'd have to see that in person though, but the round is capable of that range I believe. Westrifle has pretty awesome pricing on their mosins right now, and should only cost about $50 to have it re-crowned if necessary. HTH

With the average SKS you should be able to hit a pie plate consistently at 100 yards, or a bit smaller groups with a good rest. It is the bullet that is deficient for long range shooting, not the rifle. That said, its a total buzz for lighting up a gravel pit. It is the most bang for your buck at todays prices in sks rifles and ammunition.

Further to Mosin rifles, Westrifle has them for as low as $110. It cost 25 bucks to ship using Canada Post. Its more capable of long shots, can be properly scoped, and can knock down large animals for hunting.

All said, these are the cheapest rifles and ammunition on the market. If these are not affordable, shooting is not your sport. Expenses increase massively when looking at other options.

It's pretty much been said already above, but...

Up to 300 yards = SKS

300 to 1000+ yards = Mosin Nagant

The Mosin Nagant shines in longer ranges, but most WWII combat occurred within 300 yards. So the SKS was developed specifically to be effective at the shorter distances where rate of fire was as important as accuracy. You have to remember that military firearms didn't need to bullseye MOA, they just needed to hit a 6' x 2' target. It was better to wound an enemy than headshot them, since treating seriously wounded soldiers was a bigger draw on enemy resources.

If you are talking about long range accuracy with a Milsurp rifle, IMO, you can't beat a Swede Mauser. The Mosin Nagant will give you acceptable groupings at a distance, but in most cases, is no tack driver.

I find my SVT-40 to be a wee bit more accurate than my Mosin, while packing a very high fun factor... JP.

Could look at a stevens 200 as well. Its a bolt gun and they have a ton of accessories you can add as money allows. They can be accurate as hell as well.
Get gun scope and go shooting, when momey comes up you can rebarrel with a match barrel and will only make it better

I would look around here:

THere are a few cheap builds in there

What is your definition of accurate? At 200m with iron sights I can land all my shots in an area the size of a human torso. As far as the SKS is concerned, thats accurate. Compared to a proper hunting rifle with a scope, thats slightly shy of the broad sign of a barn.

The SKS is not a target rifle. I've never noticed any differences in accuracy at up to 150 yards when the barrel was so hot that touching it for a second would have been something you'd only do once.

I've never fired my SKS beyond 200 yards, but within that distance I've found it to be an acceptable rifle for what it is. I wouldn't want one for anything beyond 350 yard shooting, but that's not what it was made for.

Chinese ones go for like just under 200 bucks, I don't think you'll regret your purchase so long as you remember it's not something the Russians would have given to their marksmen. For plinking and target shooting within reasonable distances, it's great fun. Can't argue with the ammo price either. As the poster above me said, the SKS is an effective rifle for combat at distances of up to 300 meters, possibly a little more. We don't use our SKS rifles against people here in Canada, thank goodness, but its decent capabilities as a combat rifle translate into fun paper punching for us. Get one, hell, get two!

i have both sks and mosin and i like the mosin for longer range accuracy, for long range accuracy on a budget why dont you get a single shot h&r with bull barrel i think it runs for about 280 and comes in different calibers or get the non bull barrel one which comes with a scope
