SKS's being re-classified ?

I think you're referring to the BOHICA syndrome, acquiescence to authority being the true Canadian national characteristic.

However, we are better informed, more aware and more motivated now than ever before. This is good and sets the stage for a new era.

IF and I mean IF the RCMP convince the government these 11 guns are "easy to convert to F/A" by whatever criteria they use, I sincerly doubt these will be classified as restricted... Easy to convert means prohibited.

11 guns ?!

can you named it ?!

1- 858
2- Swiss arm
3- SKS
4- m-305/M1A
and ?!?!

Canadas aboriginal people have thousands and thousands of SKS rifles. They aren't going to turn them in, they will tell Justin to pound sand.

You are correct and lets see them have another Oka standoff on reserves across the country. I have talked with many of my native inlaws and they tell me that the RCMP will only get their firearms after all their ammo is spent. SKS's are owned by many natives I know, so I think that the RCMP may bite off more than they can chew with the disarmament agenda.

Most if not all semi auto .22 rifles can be converted to full auto with enough reworking, same as most semiauto firearms, especially blowback operation ones.

What are they going to use as the reasoning for the status change when that is made public?

There has to be close to a million or better SKS rifles sold in Canada since the early eighties . I heard of one importer that has single-handedly brought in a couple hundred thousand.

A few of the boys I go hunting with suggest they would rather dump them into the lake than turn them in. Let the gun-nazis look for them forever.

As mentioned in a previous post, the firearms act won't mean dirt if it has no compliance.

Ok so a friend is taking the local Hunter safety/ PAL course. The other night the instructor stated that the SKS was going to be re-classified to Restricted shortly. His reasoning was that they are too easy to convert to Full Auto. I have 3 of them so I am calling "Bull" on that one. But after the Swiss Arms crap who knows?

Any thoughts ?

Ken

My first thought is this instructor should stop trying to impress folks with how smart he is, my second thought is we should stop talking about this instructor.

I strongly suspect that if the SKS became restricted or prohibited ; that most of them would just disappear into the woodwork until the govt. changed again . I am very doubtful if very many SKS owners would be dropping by the local cop shop to turn in their personal property for destruction....

You're not even close. The SKS appeals to a certain segment of Canada's firearms enthusiasts and other segments abhor them. A lot of that has to do with the morons that insist on shooting up ranges/leaving hundreds of spent cases laying around, shooting up the trees along with bottles, cans and cardboard boxes along hiking trails. I've even seen a bunch of TVs and plastic oil containers set up for the same thing.

If we lose the SKS to the bureaucrats a lot of it will be the fault of such actions. Cheap and consistently available, relatively accurate rifles/ammo mean many people just abuse the hell out it all. There are a lot of people out there in the woods these days. When some fool cuts loose with his SKS or a half dozen do it at the same time it scares a lot of those that use those areas and trails for other recreational purposes. Those same people go back to their offices, places of work, get togethers and chat it up and the list goes on. Many ranges have banned the rifles from use because of the attitude of a few owners.

This whole thing started several years ago when a dealer found out he had a defective SKS that fired in full auto. Any semi can be converted to full auto. Even lever/pump actions can be converted to full auto. That's how the UK got away with banning them. Castro's people carried a rifle called the "Cuban Winchester." It was a model 92 lever action that was converted in relatively sizeable quantities by an American soldier/defector.

Do you actually think they care if noncompliance rates are high? Then they will get to further demonize Canadian gun owners as being radical nutjob criminals, and justify even stricter gun laws to deal with the abundance of prohibited firearms available in Canada.

Also, if they ever get close to having to approve any sort of AK47 looking gun based on the SKS platform, they could move against the SKS just to block the import of what could be considered a variant.

The M-1 carbine with its 18" barrel is the reason that semi auto centerfire rifles with barrels under 18 1/2" are restricted. M-1s were turning up in robberies, so all were restricted.

WTF was your point ??????????????????

Given that they are native, many without settled treaty rights....the LEO would likely not bother even charging them, the charge would be thrown out even before the ink was dry. This also gives any non native facing charges a way to challenge any prohibition under the charter for unequal treatment under the law.

Was that not one that had a stuck firing pin due to cosmoline?

Based on the fiasco that ensued when they tried to pull that sh!t with the CZ858 (which some would argue was a justifiable reclassification) there is no chance in hell they would attempt to do that with a rifle as commonly available as the SKS. The entire combloc supply of these rifles was dumped on Canadian shores, many without the LGR in place. Good luck lol.

That made me tear up to hear how that tidbit of history came about. Thanks for the education, I'm sure I'll be incorporating that into one of my future letters to my MP, Ralphy and Sunny Ways.

Completely different government at the time. It took the CPC stepping in to do anything about it. The liberals are not very concerned about losing your vote because they know they never had it and never would.

The CPC on the other hand wasn't willing to alienate the gun vote.

The liberals have already vowed to undo the re-re-classification and move those rifles back into prohibited.

Yes there are thousands upon thousands of SKS out there, they don't know who owns them or where they are. However, most people will comply, many won't. Do you think the liberals care about a bunch of gun nut conservatives?

Edit: also, they plan to put all classifications back in the hand of unelected RCMP who aren't accountable to anyone. Somehow, on the topic of firearms, policy making authority in the hands of elected officials seems like a bad thing. The CPC said they would take the final.say AWAY from the RCMP and put it into the hands of elected officials; the liberals on the other hand campaigned on the EXACT opposite, saying they would take it out of the hands of accountable.elected officials and put it into the hands of the police. And the liberal supporters cheered this as if its common sense to have police making policy. In my opinion when police make the policy they enforce then you are living in a police state. The liberals argue against the RCMP having the level of authority they have in many ways, but are the EXACT opposite with respect to firearms.

So once the liberals do that, they don't even have to change the classification on any of these firearms. They can just let the RCMP go to town on firearms while they stand on the sidelines saying that its their prerogative (cheering all the way).

Its really a messed up broken system. A lot of people on here think the threat of reclassification is simply fear mongering. However, the means and the will to do so Is there. I don't k ow what WILL happen, just that we are stuck in a bad spot.
