Completely different government at the time. It took the CPC stepping in to do anything about it. The liberals are not very concerned about losing your vote because they know they never had it and never would.
The CPC on the other hand wasn't willing to alienate the gun vote.
The liberals have already vowed to undo the re-re-classification and move those rifles back into prohibited.
Yes there are thousands upon thousands of SKS out there, they don't know who owns them or where they are. However, most people will comply, many won't. Do you think the liberals care about a bunch of gun nut conservatives?
Edit: also, they plan to put all classifications back in the hand of unelected RCMP who aren't accountable to anyone. Somehow, on the topic of firearms, policy making authority in the hands of elected officials seems like a bad thing. The CPC said they would take the final.say AWAY from the RCMP and put it into the hands of elected officials; the liberals on the other hand campaigned on the EXACT opposite, saying they would take it out of the hands of accountable.elected officials and put it into the hands of the police. And the liberal supporters cheered this as if its common sense to have police making policy. In my opinion when police make the policy they enforce then you are living in a police state. The liberals argue against the RCMP having the level of authority they have in many ways, but are the EXACT opposite with respect to firearms.
So once the liberals do that, they don't even have to change the classification on any of these firearms. They can just let the RCMP go to town on firearms while they stand on the sidelines saying that its their prerogative (cheering all the way).
Its really a messed up broken system. A lot of people on here think the threat of reclassification is simply fear mongering. However, the means and the will to do so Is there. I don't k ow what WILL happen, just that we are stuck in a bad spot.
Which 11 guns are in their cross hairs?
Was that not one that had a stuck firing pin due to cosmoline?
Based on the fiasco that ensued when they tried to pull that sh!t with the CZ858 (which some would argue was a justifiable reclassification) there is no chance in hell they would attempt to do that with a rifle as commonly available as the SKS. The entire combloc supply of these rifles was dumped on Canadian shores, many without the LGR in place. Good luck lol.
As there are more and more people coming from abroad to Canada, and unfortunately not from the traditional democratic countries, these new Canadians bring with them the ideas from their former countries. Most of those countries are current or former dictatorships, where most people believe that general citizens should not have any guns at all, this is how they educated there. "If you are not a criminal, why would you need a gun?"
(The number of hunters in those countries is negligible, as well, or many of them are poachers, i.e. criminals too).
When they come to Canada, they are mostly in contact with official propaganda, from school to TV and movies etc. So they become even more conditioned to think that all people who own guns are criminals, gangsters, crazy racists, white supremacists, etc. What's important, the gun owners are ALIEN to the growing proportion of the Canadian population.
This is why ideas like the right to have a gun sound more and more crazy to more Canadians. Among other ideas, like saying openly what you think, also totally unimaginable in dictatorship countries. (Can you imagine even mentioning that you own a gun, in a typical Ontario school, unless you are looking for trouble?) These people don't give a rat's ass about the government coming and taking all the guns and even throwing all of "legal gun owners" to prison, if need be, the more the merrier. And Liberals know that, because these people are their today's and tomorrow's voters.
"It is the demography, stupid."

The RCMP-CFC is refusing to disclose...unless it's to the CBC, of course.
Where on earth did you get the idea that "the entire supply" of the combloc SKS rifles was dumped into Canada. Canada is a relatively small market in a BIG world. Many third world militaries still issue and are still purchasing them. They certainly aren't making new rifles for that market. Now is the time to pick one up. These great little rifles won't last forever. If and when the Liberals ratify applying the UNATT regulations to Canada they will dry up completely and so will the ammo. Why do you thing Century International pulled out of Montreal and moved most of their operations to the US?
The M-1 carbine with its 18" barrel is the reason that semi auto centerfire rifles with barrels under 18 1/2" are restricted. M-1s were turning up in robberies, so all were restricted.
Not sure how many were turning up in robberies but I do know they were as popular as the SKS and with the stroke of a pen they all became restricted and many just disappeared. there was possibly hundreds of thousands in Canada at that time. The registry may or may not indicate how many are still here.
There didn't need to be a lot turning up in robberies for this to be an excuse. Saw photos of one recovered from a robbery in Quebec. It had been shortened at both ends, a la Patty Hearst. Had been converted to auto. NOT M2 style, it was a different system. Neatly done, quite creative.
M-1s were popular enough, but I don't think numbers can be compared with SKS numbers. Doubt that there were hundreds of thousands.
I remember going into the SIR retail store in Polo Park, Winnipeg. There was a rack of nice looking carbines. Took one off the rack, pulled back on the cocking handle to make sure it was clear. Noted that it said US Carbine caliber .30 M2. Looked into the mag. well, and the teeter totter was in place. Selector had been pulled.
I hope you are right. So far, they have been predominantly voting for the parties which want to ban all guns. Many of the people coming in from offshore know a hell of a lot more about firearms and their use than most people realize. They come from areas where AK47s and M16s are common place. Same goes for handguns. Even if the nations laws forbade them from having the firearms they had them out of necessity and obtained them along with the ammo by any means possible. Sometimes at great cost.
I have been surprised on more than one occasion in the past few years how knowledgeable many of those refugees are. You can bet that at first opportunity those folks will arm themselves one way or another. Considering their circumstances and backgrounds it would be foolish if not STUPID to expect anything else.
