SKS's flying off the Equipment Exchange

Another feature of a Yugo that I really like - when grenade launcher sight is up, gas system is shut off and it turns into a straight pull bolt action. So I don't need to chase brass at the range while doing my load development and accuracy is not affected by moving parts. And that grenade launcher thingy seems to be very handy to strap Magnetospeed chrono on.

I have 3 Russian and 1 Chinese SKS's in various configurations. The only reason that I've never been interested in the Yugo SKS's is that they do not have chrome-lined bore. I've been shooting exclusively corrosive ammo. One of my Russians, the 2014 Molot refurb has already nearly 3,000 rounds through the pipe. The bore looks like brand new. Sharp, silver shining rifling. Obviously, I thoroughly clean with Ballistol after each shooting session. I wonder how would the Yugo SKS bore look like after 3,000 rounds? If someone has it let me know about it.

Depends on when and how they clean it.

When shooting corrosive I always flush out the barrel with boiling water. Wait for everything to dry (15 minutes) and then proceed to clean rifle like every other one I own.

Was at a range when someone brought a chrome lined SKS and pulled it out of their case. Outside of gun was covered in pitted metal - looked like it just came up from the bottom of a lake after 40 years.
Couldn't open action. Came over to borrow 2x4 on my bench so they could force it open.

Got it open. Saving grace is they couldn't chamber a round. Instructed them not shoot the rifle (it was dead).
When I asked had they cleaned it after their last session - the answer was no. Put it in the case and threw it under the bench seat of the truck.
Told them guns weren't designed for one time use -and that they must be rich.

From what I could tell from the stocks - it had been in pretty good shape.

Chrome will give you time to clean it (like in wartime use). Civilians don't have to wait for the artillery barrage to subside before pulling out the cleaning rod.

Today I found out that my Russian is what is considered a “letter gun”... had no idea and wish that it had its original stock and magazine at this point... Somethings tells me though that retailers that sell ones in Tapco stocks probably pick ones with cracked stocks or blemished mags/gas tubes.... if only I could have the original stock for it and magazine and gas tube now that I know it’s supposedly rarer...

A few days ago I bought a Tapco SKS from Durham Outdoors before they jacked up the price. Still waiting for a shipping notice. It's interesting what I'll get in that Tapco stock. I already have one nice "letter" SKS from 1957, laminate that looks like never issued so I'm not so anxious.
By the way, how do you like your Tapco SKS? How does it shoot? I've never had a Tapco SKS before. I just bought this new one on a whim.

Honestly I wanted to love the tapco mags but they’re just too cumbersome and annoying (you also lose bolt hold open and can’t use stripper clips)... maybe if I get some sort of forward operated mag release they’ll be a bit better. I went ahead and got a standard mag for it. Other than that, it’s a bit annoying having to take the pistol grip off for thorough cleanings that require the trigger pack and mag to come out... it’s basically a long screw that threads right into the plastic stock (I have no doubt that you will eventually start getting play and need a bigger screw for it.... I got a scout scopes mount for it also that I just finished installing. Haven’t shot this one yet but I’m sure she will be a good shooter.

In the end though there is no denying that the pistol grip definitely helps it point better.

No bolt hold open you're saying? Every video with shooting an SKS with Tapco stock shows that the bolt is hold open after last round! For instance, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZA4qlAz3Qg&t=39s. Before buying mine I watched a few videos to make sure that the bolt stays hold open. It would be a great disappointment if it didn't.

I used a duckbill magazine in the past and the bolt held open no problem.. That was a Promag one though.

Sorry I was wrong about the bolt hold open. I still much prefer the original magazine though to be honest. Have yet to try the tapco mags with one of the mag release adapters I see people have (either the extended pull ones or the totally redesigned ak style push ones).

You guys see the unissued Russians that retailers are all of a sudden getting. I’ve seen a couple websites list them for 699+... had no idea that unissued Russians existed in large numbers in Canada still...

I saw those ones from tenda I’m sure they are referbs. but they are saying unissued kinda misleading.

You need to modify the mag's lips to accept stripper clips and you can also modify the Tapco pistol grip so that it does not need to be removed for cleaning.
I did both of these modifications to my stock and all my mags when I was using the Tapco SKS stuff.

In the end, I found the whole Tapco platform is much too cumbersome. I've been running my SKS in stock configuration for the last few years and it is much handier that way.

I'm quite positive that those Russian SKS's were imported more recently from Ukraine rather than being stored in Canada However, Ukraine becomes dried out. The only countries that still have some relatively large stocks of the SKS's left are the Russian Federation (out of the question due to sanctions) and China. The latter is a bit unpredictable nowadays due to political situation evolving.
