skulls and head shots

OK... to recap... you are watching a zombie show on TV, you don't hunt, have never shot an animal and you are wondering if you can stab a deer through the head or shoot it through the head and kill it possibly while injured and stuck down a well......

My answer to you is "porcupine".... makes about as much sense as your thread does.....
Apparently you missed the point. Can a deer skull stand up to a knife stab like the a commonly performed in the movie "the walking dead". It is hypothetical. Could it be done to a young deer?

I watch the show and never has a deer been stabbed in the head. Are you looking for zombie deer? Lol Culling of animals is to fill the freezer and put food on the table. Should be done quickly and humanely as possible.

All your points are valid. Now say you shot the deer and it's still alive, your firearm malfunctions, you got a knife. Would you wait for 6 hours for it to die or would you use.your knife to end it's suffering? And what if it's a zombie deer?

I've finished plenty of deer with a knife- not one of them did I try stabbing in the head though!

Ungulate skulls are generally thick to:
A) protect their brains and
B) allow for the use of antlers.

Taking advice from a zombie tv show is as bad as it sounds......

I would jump on CGN, PM you, tell you to find your knife while I drive down/up/over to Ilderton to pick you up. We'd grab a Timmies, then drive back up/down/over to my place and settle this once and for all.

100 yard shot with a 300 Win Mag. 180 gr TTSX to the head of a Doe. Dead right there. This is the kid friendly shot. The other side is not so nice.

I have done many head shots on Queen Charlotte deer simply to save meat. Used a .270. All were instant kills the head obliterated. Only other one I shot in the head was a black bear that was walking directly toward me and would not present a side shot. He dropped in his tracks. The bullet entered just right of center of his forehead and the bullet exited the back of his head re-entering his shoulder where it stopped. The whole upper right quadrant of his skull was separated and shattered. I was using a .30-06 180 grain Hornady Interlock bullet. All of these shots was at fairly close range. But would I try a knife? No. Besides sorry to ruin your fantasy but Zombies don't exist... Wait strike that last statement. They do exist but only in Parliament.

I have hundreds of deer racked up, 3 of which were NOT head shots. .30-06 with 150gr does the trick, no matter how far the shot. I have never had a single deer get up or not die instantly. No brain matter = zero suffering. Time to get back to the range boys!

If you hit the base of the antlers at the right angle, and at the right distance, a bullet could deflect off the deers skull. The probability of that happening is slim although there is a video on youtube of a .308 Winchester bouncing off the skull of a hog.

You wouldn't be able to get in close enough with a knife to be able to stab one without getting the #### kicked out of you by the deer.

Its not about accuracy its about the fact a head and move quicker then that bullet can reach its target. You may have an accurate shot, but you fire and the deer turns its head and now you've hit it in the jaw ripping its jaw off.

Smaller Sitka Blacktail here, a .30-06 hits anywhere near the head and it's an instant kill. Different story for White Tail, Mule.....

This is a load of c**p. It's proof your "hundreds of deer" with head shots is c**p too. "Anywhere near" is absolute garbage. What on earth makes you think white tail or mule deer are different stories?

For head shots to be fatal you must hit a target the size of a small orange or you will have problems. I have seen jaws shot off, a massive hole that exposed the nasal passages below the eyes and above the nose, and one with an ear and part of the skull missing, and all of them were still moving around trying to eat, drink, and were suffering obviously.

Head shots are for wannabes, or for finishing an animal that is already injured. f:P:2:

Haha, you have no idea! The deer here are on average 80lbs. You could take one out easily with a .22. I have had this discussion with other hunters until they come out and hunt with me, they think I'm full of b.s. I also hunt with a .30-06 which is way overkill for here. "Anywhere near" meaning, anywhere in the head/neck area. I've never had a deer survive any 1 shot and I've been hunting since I was 8.

I took one of my mulie bucks last year with a head-shot at about 40 yards. .270win. Instant death. The photos aren't pretty, though.

My gun shoots .75" at 200m and I spend a lot of time shooting, so a 40 yard head-shot is a "no-brainer" (pun intended).

I would not try it with a knife.

Oh, and if the OP is curious about snowshoe hare skulls; yes, they too succumb to bullets. 48 of them so far this season. ;) (and I do believe a knife would do the job, too. :) )

Oh, and one more thing; zombie skulls are brittle because zombies are partially decomposed. This is why knives, machetes, etc. can be used. If in doubt, eyes are excellent entry points.

I shoot Zombies in the head at 1000 meters all day long...I'm sure I could do the same with deer, couldn't I ?
