skulls and head shots

All your points are valid. Now say you shot the deer and it's still alive, your firearm malfunctions, you got a knife. Would you wait for 6 hours for it to die or would you use.your knife to end it's suffering? And what if it's a zombie deer?

Or you could just cut it's throat. I've had to do that a couple times. Once when a friend's brother in law shot a deer through the spine and tried to get up when I was halfway to it with no gun. Didn't want him shooting again with me between him and the deer. The other was when I hit one on the highway with my pickup, no gun. Just grab the ears and cut the throat.

Haha, you have no idea! The deer here are on average 80lbs. You could take one out easily with a .22. I have had this discussion with other hunters until they come out and hunt with me, they think I'm full of b.s. I also hunt with a .30-06 which is way overkill for here. "Anywhere near" meaning, anywhere in the head/neck area. I've never had a deer survive any 1 shot and I've been hunting since I was 8.

B.S.

No other reaction is possible.

I have hundreds of deer racked up, 3 of which were NOT head shots. .30-06 with 150gr does the trick, no matter how far the shot. I have never had a single deer get up or not die instantly. No brain matter = zero suffering. Time to get back to the range boys!

B.S for sure. Head shots are a low percentage shot, regardless of the size of the deer.

Some of us have probably hunted for longer that this poster has been alive.
We recognize a pasture patty on the trail when we see it!

Regards, Dave.

Pasture patty, that's a new one for me. LOL!!Laugh2

Oh yes, you are the be-all, end-all of hunting. I have hunted that way since I was little. I am sorry if you have had a bad head shot experience, but it works for me, every time! Not a step is taken by that deer. Like I said, if you can't hit that target, get back to the range boys! I have hunted for food my entire life, I make certain I don't miss. Come for a hunt and I'll make you eat your own words!

If you want proof of what a .30-06 will do to a deer here, I'll post some pictures, you might get squeamish. Zero brain matter = zero suffering. A lung shot in these deer just ruins meat.

It is not possible to stick a knife into a skull. It never happens to humans, as any idiot would know.

You are confused, I AM the be all and end all.

Get it strait!

You really do need to understand there are people on this forum who actually have hunted for many years, and KNOW better. You can repeat that B.S. all you want, and it won't change the smell.

Little testy, aren't we?? Struck a nerve, did I? You would have a hard time making me squeamish, newbie.

As for eating my words, the truth is very palatable, so no issues there!

I suspect you don't like to hear the truth, so react by a personal attack.

I am far from the be-all, end all hunter, but have about 55 years of hunting in BC, so not about to alter
my original statement.

Never had a bad head shot experience, since I so seldom take them. However, I have seen the results
of many so-called "instant death head shots" which were anything but. That is what is sad.

And don't tell me I need a visit to the range. I'll take you up on a competition any time, lol.

Cheers, Dave.

Why not just cut its throat??? your close enough, just cut its throat and bleed it out.

Man just when I thought I found a site with in the know people I come across this crap.

I shot a mature white tail doe square in the center of the face while it was looking at me. It was a lucky fluke shot as I was around 150 yards standing, and unsupported in a large hayfield of rolling hills. I was using a 30.06 with nosler ballistic tips if I remember correctly. What I do recall clearly is that the head basically exploded, with the sun setting behind the deer. There was a surprisingly large spray or mist, leaving only a mangled, broken lower jaw with a few teeth, and just enough hide on the back of the neck to keep the ears still connected. Nothing else remained to be found. Yum. Hey you brought up the subject.

A knife won't go threw a skull with out a hammer.
Just go and try to stab thrw 3/4" plywood and see why happens.

I won't take a head shot. Seen a guy track a moose that he shot the nose off. 2days later and moose

Just hit the lungs and relax. Never failed me yet.

I don't think a guy can stab thru a 3/4" plywood but I can see the tip of my knives on the other side of the board when I throw em ( they are 1 pounder )

I am not saying you should throw knives at deer in any case but I guess Troy Hurtubise did it before lol :HR:

ok... To recap... You are watching a zombie show on tv, you don't hunt, have never shot an animal and you are wondering if you can stab a deer through the head or shoot it through the head and kill it possibly while injured and stuck down a well......

My answer to you is "porcupine".... Makes about as much sense as your thread does.....

See then there are people like my grandfather who bagged hundreds of deer when he was a young boy and young man with nothing more than single shot from a .22LR to feed his family. They only had a single shot .2LR and ammo was scarce. They were always headshots and never a wounding shot.

Granted this was the same man who shot a moose dead with a single round from his .308NM, iron sights at 700 yards with the witnesses to prove it. He was an amazing shot and an amazing man. I only wish I could be half as good as he was.

People can claim BS all they want on these stories. I've talked to the people that were there after my grandfather's death and they confirmed the stories.

Have I taken head shots on deer? Of course. Last day of the season, damn deer wasn't walking out from being a rock or large tree, only head showing, 100 yards or less. Haven't wounded a deer yet.

I also know people who aim for the sweet spot where the neck meets the skull. There is a massive cluster of arteries, the spine, etc.

Are head shots the best place to shoot, no, you really need to be sure of your ability and rifle. The best place is still behind the front legs. Granted I've seen more wounding (not lethal) shots taken there than head shots but take that with a grain of salt :p

Again, its not about the accuracy so get that out of your head. That deer could be turning its head at the moment you squeeze that trigger and now you've hit it in the jaw or ear. Do you not get this concept? Try shooting a 1" 5 shot group with a target that randomly moves on its own.
