The wife just saw a skunk in the garage, eating the dog's food. We just moved to my FIL's place(inherited the dog!), so I'm guessing this has been going on for a while. Garage stank this morning(as did my truck), and the cheeky bugger was in there tonight even though the light was on.
I've only ever shot one skunk, that was with a flintlock and it did not go well for anyone concerned.
What's the chances of shooting a skunk without it spraying? I kept my 10-22 in the truck today, have the 17hmr at the back door. I have a .410 and some 12 gauges. Any chance of a bangflop in my garage without needing a hazmat team after?

I want the dog out of the garage along with those d@#$ cats, but it's a work in progress. I can't shut the door or they all crap in there.
I am planning on getting chickens and pheasants soon, so skunks, yotes etc all gotta go. Might invest in a cage trap, just read that you can bait it with marshmallows to avoid catching cats. I know skunks like eggs too.

Get a plastic skunk trap from Peavy Mart and a can of sardines. The skunk will not spray in the trap and can be taken else where. If you catch a cat no harm done.

you need a low top live hold trap, trust me..........if they can't lift their tail then they can't spray...........

when you shop for a trap tell them it is for skunks and they will know the right trap, it is just high enough for the skunk to get into bot low enough not to allow for a tail lift. approach the trap from behind and throw a blanket over it before you try to pick it up, if they see you coming they will go nuts.

I used to wait until dark to blanket the cage and transport it, less light means less things they see to set them off, then shoot shovel and shut up

A friend used a hotdog on a fishing rod once. Casted the hotdog in the building and reelled him in. once he was outside away from the building than he shot it. If you shoot it it will stink but its also dead so eventually you will be free of the smell. Or if you have eggs a needle and strychnine that would work but also stink(worse and longer its a slow and ####ty way to die) and maybe illegal.

Buy a medium sized live trap, bait with dog food, place under old blanket with entrance exposed

quickly lift the blanket to check to see what or if you caught something

Release the cat, if you catch a skunk take the whole shebang including the blanket to the rain barrel and lower it in, stinky end first!

Return after appropriate length of time, shovel, shut up

Everyone knows that a skunk wont spray in the presence of open flame, simply tie an oily rag to the end of an 8 ft. stick, light and drive the beast away.

Will look for a trap tomorrow. How about shooting them in the trap? Should a head to toe with number 6 birdshot shut them down without spraying?

That's one option but putting the hole in the end of the trap up to your truck exhaust is just as effective and they don't spray.

If you can catch it unawares and head shoot it stone dead it will not spray and then all you have to do is the other 2 S's................

what ever happens ,make sure you made a video ...... this could be funny as hell :D

Holy ####, we got some maniacs here.
####ing just catch and release far.

Proven method.
Live trap.
Blanket over live trap to move it.
Move it to water deeper than trap.
Shovel.

You need to teach it swimming lessons first.
The thing will spray when shot, how many deer moose bear have we all shot and when we go up to it the critter has released its bladder or crapped from the muscles relaxing?
Failing any of these suggestions, stop feeding it from the dog dish or just call a humane trapper to remove it and then block all entrances for his/her friends from finding your hospitality.
