Skunk in the garage!

Will look for a trap tomorrow. How about shooting them in the trap? Should a head to toe with number 6 birdshot shut them down without spraying?

A solid head shot usually means no spray. Then, put it next to the vehicle of someone you don't like and whack it in the body with a long handled flat shovel....:)
Watch your angles if you decide to dispatch it via gunfire. If you puncture the gland that makes that smell you'll wish it sprayed instead...

Start feeding it with some of the dog food in the bottom of an empty, bottom weighted plastic garbage can. When he's eating, sneak up and put/tie the lid on. Dispose of as you will. This worked well for me, drove him 10 mikes away into the boonies, and live released him.
Worked a treat for me. As far as the "can't spray in a live trap, maybe the one I trapped in one was super flexible, he did manage to spray.

Stop leaving pet food in the garage, it will move on quickly. As far as chickens and pheasants go Skunks have little interest in them aside from the eggs and providing a predator proof area for them isn't that difficult. In my opinion it is easier to control predators ability to access your poultry then eliminate all the potential predators.

May be a good idea once they are gone to put any food stuffs in a hard container..

I had problems with varmints getting into the garage to get to the dog food as well till I put the food in a sealed garbage can

The only good news in all of this is that you can shoot a cat anywhere and it won't stink. Try it on a couple and you will see what I mean. As far as the skunk goes, I would quite feeding it for starters. If it takes up shop anyway, then the plastic livetrap is a good idea - a low one - and then take it to the dump or somewhere you can give it a high speed lead injection.

Very wrong I have had several meatking chickens killed by skunks, so have my neighbors. Skunks will kill and eat anything a raccoon will and smell worse doing it.

DO NOT SHOOT IT INDOORS under any circumstances! The only effective way to remove skunk smell from wood is fire, as in burn the garage down because it stinks so bad. I'm not saying it cannot be done but I have never seen or shot a skunk without it stinking the area up. Catch it in the open (Provided it is legal) and shoot the bugger a 12ga is a perfect over kill. If you trap them a CB long 22 round dose the trick. They can be gassed with a truck, just make sure the thing is dead. A bag of hydrated lime spread over the area where it died will help kill the smell (as well as everything else)

I have used the trap and blanket method more times than I remember. The recently widowed neighbour lady had set a dog crate sized trap and got a skunk in her garage. She called me to help so I took my nephew who was about 17 at the time. She had not put a blanket on previous so let the games begin. Took a big tarp me on one side and the nephew on the other and his eyes were as big as plates when I explained the process. Blanket on no problem. Next back truck up and load said cage on truck. Nephew was getting really hinckey at this point but I told him to man up. Cage on truck down to the pond and he was totally amazed at how long that critter was under water before he succumbed. The boy still tells folks about that one LOL.

Another vote for the trap and blanket. Had a skunk under our house and used this method to relocate him. I was surprised how docile it was, just walked out of the trap when I opened the door and lumbered on into the woods as if nothing had happened. Had it's back to me the whole time, too, I was a bit nervous for a minute there. :)

I've been through this many times.
Move the dogfood dish outside where you can see it.
Shoot it when it shows up to eat.
If you want to kill a skunk, be smarter than the skunk.
They have good sniffers, he found the food inside, he'll find it outside.
Skunks quickly become creatures of habit when there is a perpetual food source. I had one that used to show up on the back step at 11pm every night to eat dog food.
I moved the dish 20yds away and my kids and I watched a movie, and the security monitor til it showed up. End of story.
The only skunk I have ever shot that didn't squirt was a Booner at a buddies place. 30yds away with a 240gr RNFP 44spl round.
It just stopped dead in it's tracks like flipping a switch. no smell and 1 drop of blood. Couldn't even find the hole.

I just love reading skunk threads. In the past, we caught several with homemade plywood live traps. They never sprayed in the trap. The last time it was used, my
FIL had a family of skunks under his porch. The trap was set off so he took it out into the field and the BIL law came over with his 22. They opened the trap and skunks started to come out. He shot 3 or 4 and had no more shells when the last skunk came out. The FIL herded the skunk around the field until my BIL got back with more shells.
We still laugh about the "skunk herding".

The wife just saw a skunk in the garage, eating the dog's food. We just moved to my FIL's place(inherited the dog!), so I'm guessing this has been going on for a while. Garage stank this morning(as did my truck), and the cheeky bugger was in there tonight even though the light was on.
I've only ever shot one skunk, that was with a flintlock and it did not go well for anyone concerned.
What's the chances of shooting a skunk without it spraying? I kept my 10-22 in the truck today, have the 17hmr at the back door. I have a .410 and some 12 gauges. Any chance of a bangflop in my garage without needing a hazmat team after?

I have not read most of the posts on here, but they are always the same, and none of the ways to shoot him without a stink, that I have read on here will work.
I have a sure fire method of no stink shooting, I have had it at least twice on CGN and not one soul has even mentioned, or recognized it. Therefore, I will not post it on CGN again. But if the OP wants to know the secret to successful no stink killing, send me a PM and I will tell you.

There are those of us that are always willing to learn something new Bruce. No stink shooting is something I'd like to know :)

My late buddy said to spine them, if they can't lift their tail they can't spray.

Simple method that has always worked for me is to take an old portable radio (any radio will do) then find the ugliest music on the dial. Set it where Monsieur Le' Pew is hanging out then crank the volume up and walk away.

Evidently skunks are music critics....who knew?

As for the dog and cat food...if you feed them....they will come. Find a different place/method to feed the pets. Feed the cats up high where the skunk cannot access, feed the dog inside your porch for a while until your skunk leaves.

Much obliged Bruce!
Whooda thunk that years of experience would yield such a simple but effective method of dealing with skunks...that just happens to go hand in hand with my "move the dish" maneuver.
