Well I got the surprise of my life last night when I went to collect eggs. I opened the door to the hen house and lo and behold there was Pepe the skunk munching down on some fresh eggs (The bastard!)...I quickly shut the door and headed back to the house to get my shotty...By the time I got back Pepe had disappeared with an obviously full stomach as he ate about a 12 eggs...I was going to wait for him to leave as I do have a barn full of animals behind the henhouse...

Here is my delemma: Shotgun as it is more effective or my trusty SKS as I love having the opportunity to shoot it?

I'd shoot for the head with a .22, I wouldn't want skunk material spread all over the place.

I really think you want to trap the bugger and remove him to elsewhere before you drop him off or do him in. They seem to be able to spray even when they are "killed instantly", which could negatively affect both egg production and your love life.

Place the trap a bit away from the hen house baited with some goodies. Once in there, it is possible to approach close enough to shoot him and run, or even to cover it with a tarp and remove.

Wish I could but no .22....have a .177 pistol but doubt that would do the job...So my options are limited... :(

Just gives me something to add to my x-mas and b-day list...

Andy....good suggestion and one i considered since I have a variety of leg holds but I also have about 4 barn cats so trapping that close to the barn is not an option.... :|

What about one of those "kinder and gentler" traps that they sell at Canadian Tire for $35? Once full, drop it in a barrel of water and.....

BB - 3" x7 should do the trick. SKS would be so much more fun though.

Yeah...thats my thinking plus it always scares the hell out of my neighboors.... 8) whose dogs may have pilfered a few chickens over the past two years....

I'd go for the shock and awe approach. Bait him to a seacure area of your property and then let him have it with a fury of 7.62 FMJ's.

Soak a few eggs in a bit of moonshine and leave them out for Mr. Skunk. After he eats those he will have no idea what is going on abd then drown the bastard. Or just shoot him in the head. I've heard of people doing it with geese, soaking beans in the shine laying a load of them in teh field. The stuff gets in the system of the geese instant drunk and no more flying.

Adds a new meaning to "drunk as a skunk". Plus you ever notice that when you share a few drinks with your worst enemy you end up friends singing bawdy irish ditties....."Her eyes they shone like the diamonds....." After all friends do not let skunks drink alone....

holy christ its been a long day....

I used a wooden trap with a sliding door which worked well. I would take the skunks into the mountains and let them out and shoot them with a 410 using #4 shot. It worked very well. Make sure the skunk is down wind.

If you took the time to take them to the mountains, why bother shooting them?

Don't get me wrong, I'm no "save the skunks" activist, but it just seems pointless... then again, I don't know the proximity of 'your house' to 'the mountains'.

My dad used to trap them on the mink ranch we owned with a "Havahart" trap. The trap was covered with a burlap sack when it was set out. The sack kept the skunk from spraying when the trap was carried away. A hole was then dug out in the field, the trap set on the edge of the hole, the skunk shot in the head with a .22lr, dumped in the hole and a shovel full of dirt piled on. This was a two man job, all done in one swift motion. :|

I suppose you could use some sardines mixed with a big dose of rat poison in the trap as bait and just let him die in the trap. That might work.
