Damn and blast! Looked forward the hunt all year long. We were up there on the long weekend and things were looking really good. We saw a yearling and it's momma on the front lawn. Even on the weekend before the hunt there was fresh track and droppings, so things were very promising. So what happens? My buddy and I are overlooking prime spots and spent the whole day Monday sitting still and watching. Nothing moving! Same thing on Tuesday and I'm wondering "WTF?" There's not even very much gunfire from the surrounding areas. I'm packing up at last light to head back to house, and what do I hear? A pack of wolves, fairly close, just howling and singing away. To make a long story short, all the game was pushed out. I saw a fisher, a marten, a young moose cow, and 2 orphaned fawns running around, but that was it. I'd kind of hoped the pack would move out before the end of the week, but it wasn't to be. i got a shot at one of the pesky varmits on Tues. but that was the only shot fired over the whole week. To add insult to injury, on Sat. night, the 2 young deer were on the lawn about 10 feet away from me. Anyone else in the same area had the same experience? I hope the rest of you guys had better luck than we did!

yup thats what this weekend was for me as well.... snow snow snow, nothing moving, we found good chunks between cutlines with lots of tracks leading in non out, we spent an hour trying to push it (300 X 400 cops) and could not get anything to come out, even walking through it did nothing. on our way out, 10 minutes past leagal light, thats when two big does are just sitting on the forestry road, we actualy had to get out of the truck to get them to move out of our way.... thats the closest I have ever been to saying "**** it" and poeching

things arnt looking good in that WMU.Wolves and hybred/yotes are chasing out and killing off a lot of the other critters. We have been surprised at the decline in the deer population the past few years.

My camp is in 56, we saw 15 deer and a young bull during the moose hunt. We usually see much more. I am going in this week for the tail end of the deer hunt. Populations swing quite a bit in this area and talking to some local trappers it seems that predators are thick at the moment and its only a matter of time before they eat themselves out of house and home. The MNR is also giving everyone an antlerless tag so that needs to stop if the population is suffering at the moment.

You are required to purchase a game seal for wolf/coyote in 56 now, and you can only purchase 2 per year.

Here as well not to mention all the twps surrounding Algonquin Park are now closed to hunting Wolves and Yotes. Want to know who came up with this hair brained scheme? Tags for Wolves/Yotes? Not who you might think! I sat at a table, sharing dinner with a group of hunters and their guides/hosts at a well known Wolf Hunting Outfitters as two of the hunters explained how it was their doing, these guys were some kind of higher ups in the OFAH. They were having discussions with the MNR about funding for Wolf harvest rate studies and proposed this license system to the MNR to fund the study. Well I would guess that never happened, the study I mean but here we are 6 years later with a Wolf/Coyote license still. My outfitter friend looked at his two clients and I could tell he wanted to rip them apart but controlled himself and said if they wanted to know how many wolves are harvested each year call me, I am one of only two outfitters in the province hunting the darned things! So you can thank the OFAH for the wonderful Wolf/Coyote license system! Just one more reason I am no longer an OFAH member......

well that sucks you guys could bring it up though they always like to hear for the people on the ground ive sent a few suggestions in about opening a shotgun season(other then the one already there for group hunts) for deer in 94

sucks to read about numbers being low in areas, an high numbers of Wolf an yotes an also sucks you need tags for such predators..

sounds like a few of you guys who get to hunt in that area, need to get a varmint rig an start helpin out ya fellow Deer herds!!
Sure, they dont taste good, theres no trophy racks and they are cunning an smaller targets.... kill one dog, saved 10 deer

Just an update. I was seriously bummed about the way the hunt went. Don't get me wrong.....a day up north is worth a week in the city, and I had a marvelous week with excellent company, but no deer. WELL!!!! Being member of the CFB Borden Rod & Gun, I got to go on the Dec. hunt. To make a long story short, of the 4 days I had up there, we had one day where it didn't rain or snow, and that was Thursday (6 Dec.). Our team captain got a nice doe, and later that afternoon I nailed a nice buck! I thought I'd share the joy with my fellow hunters.
