SL-8 or Swiss Arms

IIRC it came to market during the US AWB and HK (in typical fashion) never changed the design post-ban, which is why the design is so bizarre.

I've always found it to be 'teh suck' for exactly that reason. I'm no fan of product impairment to get something remotely similar.

On the flip, some people own, shoot and absolutely love theirs.

To each their own.

Same. I just don't understand why anyone would get an SL8 over a Swiss Arms with the negligible difference in price (before you jump on me, notice that the SL8 does not come with ANY sights, necessitating the purchase of a scope + mount, $300-400 min.).

Interesting as my SL8 came with full length top rail and sights?

I have owned all the versions of the swiss arms rifles and also the SL8, all are great shooters and eat any ammo you put in them, I have never had a FTF, FTE, or any issue with any of the guns. They are both excelent choices if looking at non restricted and shoot very well. If looking at optics, I woud lean towards Zeiss, S&B, Hensoldt, etc. These rifles deserve good optics since they can shoot so well.

I own both rifles, the SL8 was my first rifle ever but once the SA CG came into my life the SL8 quickly fell out of favor.

For me it was the weight distribution on the SL8 too front heavy for my liking.

The SA CG feels heavier between the two but the weight distribution is MUCH better for me.

My only gripe of the SA CG is the bi pod that it came with i find it too flimsy.

As for optics the Swiss has a Millet DMS-1 scope and the SL8 has a Bushnell 3200 elite 5-15x40mm scope.

Accuracy wise i would say that they are on par using factory loads.

The only thing that has changed is the prices. Up 15% on rifles. Up 100% on accessories. Not sure of Nichols or SAN is responsible for that.

I'm betting Kampfhamster can validate if SAN raised the prices. If they did, it would really stand to reason that he is paying ridiculous hikes in Switzerland as well.

Especially the ridiculous pricing on magazines. I know the price he is paying is much differet based off discussions at Sigforum. But we must also understand that his paradigm of purchasing is also different. (I believe he buys them from his local Army Arsenal.)

I'd like to hear his take on it.

No offense is meant to TSE.

New fans of these guns should understand that The Shooting Edge was a Pioneer for bringing these guns into Canada. As I understand, they went out of their way to do so.

Nor were they responsible for the price hikes. Even after the start of price changes, I remember being in their Calgary store and looking at an 'old priced' Carbine.

But its always preferable to know what the case is devoid of rumor.

Considering R. Nichols track record of standing up for the little guy I am pretty sure they are to blame.

I am going to write SAN (handwritten letter) and complain. Probably won't make a bit of difference but I hate Canadian companies gouging us just because we live in Canada.

Amazing shooter ... easy to strip, clean and assemble ... running a leupold 3-9x40 mildot tacticle scope ... love this thing ... hate the bi-pod. :D

Just an FYI:

1) There was an increase, but if you call our store, you can see what we have in stock and our prices... ;)

2) We did manage in the transition with Nicholls to be the "Official" distributor to retain our ability to order parts direct.

3) We are also still are the "Official" service and warranty centre for all of SAN Swiss Arms stuff.

Cheers,

JR

And from what I understand, a SAN qualified gunsmith on staff.

Well done, and thanks for the recent availability of 5/20 mags.

When do the 5/30s show up. :bump:

Jesus, this is becoming a standard response for me now. Just cut and paste.. :D

Finish: ceramic-reinforced enamel coat called Ilaflon.

Materials: The receiver and gas system are made of steel. The barrel, bolt, bolt carrier, and firing pin are all made with steel that has been gas nitrided, hardened and tempered. The bolt and carrier, along with most other components internal to the receiver undergo a phosphating process.

Quality control: Swiss Made. Does not leave the factory untill it shoots 24 shots into 4.3"X2.8" at 330 yards with Swiss Match ammo (1.3 MOA). (7x11cm at 300m).

Reliability: AK style gas system. 30,000 round barrel life. 100,000+ rounds for all major components. I have never, ever had a FTF or a FTE, and that's in -20C to +20, with all kinds of high and low powder reloads.

I paid $2500 for mine. Excellent condition with only 300 rounds down the pipe. Barrel life is 30,000 rounds, so there is nothing to worry about there.

Not only that, but it is my favorite gun. Just looking at it makes me want to head to the range. Every couple of days I get the strong urge to open up the gun cabinet and handle it. Makes me all warm and fuzzy every time :D.

Both can be very accurate. SL8 can be customized a lot (read spend a lot of money) but it has a poor trigger and unless you are a fan of polymer the SAN gun is a more robust piece. The SL8 has a lot of fans here in the states...of course the pre-ban 550s and 551s cost $10,000+ here. Both of these are or started life as SL8's:
