SL8-5 arrived!

Instead modyfing receiver you can dremel two shalow grooves in the front of G36 magazine. Works like a charm.

It works, but it introduces a weak spot that may crack later and destroys the retail value of the (expensive) mags. Grinding the nubbins out of the receiver is faster, won' cause problems, is invisible and retains the retail value of the rifle.

Me got thinking..... If you can modify a G36 mag to fit, why not a AR15 mag?
So, I dug out the mag conversion kit. It doesn't fit well unless you remove the stock mag catch. I don't know how many of you have ever removed that catch, but it's a b*tch to get that spring back in there.

So I looked at the stock mag-well. It has a void on the bottom at the rear of the well. Light goes on.....:D why not grind out the same void in the conversion? Sure, it will make a little drag on the AR mag, but I can live with that. So, conversion kit problem is solved, now for the mag.

Installed the mag-conversion kit ( Still haven't ground anything out ), and noticed that the only thing holding the mag from going in the whole way is just PART of one of those nubs. :dancingbanana: I think I can dremel a little off the mag and the follower and make it fit. If I can, I now have a rifle that is completely stock, and can be converted to AR mags with no mods to the gun. I like to dress up a gun, not tear it apart.... specially something this expensive.

Thoughts???

$50 magazine vs. $2000.00 rifle. I know which I have chosen.

a) if you can get G36 mags, limited to 5 rounds, for $50 then you could make a mint selling them here for $125 each. Perhaps things have changed and my pricing is out of date - do you have a link to a Canadian vendor that is selling them for $50?

b) don't be silly - the rifle's value is affected not one wit by taking the nubbins out. The mag's value is. See a) as to why I think this is an issue.

Little update for those considering the magwell conversion for your SL8. I modified the conversion well to make it fit with the stock mag catch still in place. It's a little rough, as I did it with a dremel but I plan to take it to the local machine shop and get them to finish it on the milling machine. Might throw elite machining a note and let them know what mods I made. :D

Second, I just hate the thoughts of grinding those nubs out. If I ever sell this bad boy, I want to be able to say it's 100% stock, no hack jobs. So, I took the AR15 mag and cut a notch out on the right front corner, just the thickness of the side steel, about 1/4 - 3/8" wide and about 1/2" long ( down the side of the mag ). Works like a charm, all the rounds chamber fine and the mag goes in smooth and releases pretty darn well too.:dancingbanana:

Here is the fully assembled gun with the AR15 mag.

Here is a pic of the side of that modified mag.

Pic of the the top of that same mag.

And last a pic of the modified magwell installed on the gun. Note the stock mag catch is still in place and the dremel marks on the bottom of the well.

Any thoughts or comments?:)

Gun looks fantastic! Just ordered three! One for me and two for the boyz! What kind of groups will yours shoot? Put a scope on it? Does it prefer any particular grain. Handloaded any yet? Still have the mag conversion?

I wish I had the money for three SL-8's.

Ryan @ Wolverine quoted me $2025 for an SL8 when I ordered one last week.
P&D sells them for $2080. Unfortunately both dealers are out of stock at the moment and waiting for the next shipment.

Does the Top Notch AR15 mag adapter kit from the US require the same modifications as the adapter made by Elite Machining?

What is the accuracy on these rifles like?
Sub MOA at 100 yards?

I've read that they (the sl8) are not to fond of surplus ammo.
Groups of 20mm (that is less than a inch) at 100yards is common with quality ammo.

One of these is high on my list....along with the Sig.......and AR-10.........
