has anyone ever removed the barrel from one of these. I am considering a project that would require a barrel swap and need to know how it is held in the reciver and if a barrel could be manufactured for it without complicated milling work.

You need a barrel nut wrench and receiver block from HK. Both quite expensive; check hkpro.com boards for one. Regarding a custom barrel, goolge for exploded diagrams of the SL8. I don't know what you mean by "complicated", but it would not be an amateur gunsmith job.

I have a barrel nut wrench for them. I used it to remove a barrel in order to cut, and then thread the barrel for a Vortex.

It is not an easy job to make a barrel as the chamber end is special in that it has splines on it.

the H&K tool requires the removal of the gas port as it is like a tube / sleeve that slips over the barrel from the muzzle. This one has 4 notches that fit into the nut that holds in the barrel.

You can make your own, (or find a home made one for sale online), that does not require the removal of the gas port, its like a C shaped tube / sleeve (i.e. a piece of the sleeve has a section removed from end to end that the gas port can pass through when you slide it over the barrel), that has only 3 of the 4 notches. Guy on HKPro that uses one of these claims it works just fine.

If you're going to replace your barrel, I'd be interested in buying your old one for a little project I'm thinking of.

Looking at some of the beautiful work some of the guys here have done on their SL8s has me curious. Has anyone tried putting a flash supressor on the barrel of one of these rifles? And would you need to take the barrel off to do that?

There is a pic of one on my web site but I cannot hot link it as it is verboten. If you need the link, pm me. And yes I had to take the barrel off to do it right.
