SL8 is really heavy - how can I reduce the weight?

Its the STOCK that kills it weight wise.

If you want it to be lighter, a standard profile (skinnier) barrel will help, but getting rid of the thumbhole stock will make a huge difference.

You could get a conversion stock like Koldt posted (there is an importer for them, although i forget who, they are german made) then you can put on any Ar15 or folding ACE type stock, and an AR15 pistol grip.

That will make a world of difference.

Join the Army. Take a Machine gunners course and get into a weapons detachment. Volunteer to pack around a fifties reciever and a couple 50 cal ammo cans around the bush for no appearent reason. or even worse get into mortors and pack around 81 mm motar rounds....and you never complain about your rifle's weight ever again.

I find suspending the SL8 with 2 Helium Balloons reduces the weight significantly. Down to a negative weight (-) where it actualy starts to ascend upwards, so tie a string on it so you don't lose it!

agree. its heavy for a non restricted rifle. Its also exceptionally bulky even in G36 format for a 5.56 rifle...

Buy and AR15 ... but add LOTS of cool gear ;)

Yeah It is heavy, not that bad though. I had the barrel loosen off on mine. So I made my own wrench to tighten the bugger up. Pretty easy and not very professional. You tube has good stuff on it.

I already have the folding stock + pistol grip, its about 1/2 the weight of the standard SL8 stock.

As I mentioned, Im not a skinny guy, nor am I fat, I go to the gym about 2-3 times a week. I guess Im not doing something right, lol.

The more you hold it/use it, the lighter it gets. Even if you're just cleaning it at home, hold it up until your muscles give out. Soon you'll be like this guy:

If I were to get a g36 barrel, which is 18.6 inches (still within non-restricted range?) how much am I looking to shave off?

Removing went from the end of the rifle will significantly affect the easiness of use, since its a lot easier to hold something heavy closer to your body, than at the end of along stick.

Will it require anything else other than a barrel if I were to do a barrel swap for the g36 one?

never hunted with an M14 or SLR before huh ? :p
get a good sling for it,
ive lugged one up and down mountains shooting goats before .. it wasnt too bad ?
then again i go to the gym every morning and i think my m14 is sweet as for running around the bush with ...

failing that try and get hold of the LW version barrell.. its a light barrel with fluting .. reduces weight a fair ammount . or as someone suggested, have your barrell shaved down and fluted , if you've changed out the stock then thats really going to be the only way to drop the weight

failing that... man up :p jk, it does have a bit of weight for a mostly plastic.. - sorry i mean carbon fiber composite - rifle

yegor (Егор :)) Do not flute or cut barrel, why would you want to do such silly thing? My M14 EBR for example is about 18 pounds -that is heavy somewhat but still ok. 9lbs of your Sl8 is a diet coke of being heavy. You can choose to ignore excellent advises to get in shape and exercise but the truth is - you don't get strong by carrying heavy rifle once a week. You have to move iron 5 days a week.

Runing on the treadmill is not going to get you stronger. :p
