SL8 vs G36: some observations

Frankly, I wish that the equipment to weld Nylon66 was cheaper. Using the metal bar to connect the G36 receiver end to the SL8 receiver is ... not elegant.

I just don't know of any other affordable and safe way to do it.

How hard is it to get the paperwork in order to import a factory G36K barrel from US? I want a shorty, and (to my understanding of our laws), cutting an SL8 barrel to size is a big no-no. That, and it's alot simpler then milling a barrel, moving the gas port, and then welding on a bayonet lug.

Ordering parts is a PITA but just part of project life. There's lots of info on importation in thread if you search. I took my original barrel down to 18.5" and still keep it stored JIC. You cannot take it lower without making it a prohib device as opposed to the states where its simply a matter of a tax stamp and some creative millwork. Why? I can't forsee a time I will ever understand...:bangHead:

I know some use a plastic welder. I however used Devcon II Plasti-Weld as I didn't have the equipment or skill to weld plastic and a reciever wasn't something I was prepared to practice on. That said its been rock solid. Discussions have been that with the alterations the reciever is actually more robust after the conversion that before due to the steel spine inserts.

Fullsize G36E barrel is 18.89 in, making it non-restricted just barely, as demonstrated so kindly in this image by UncleWalther:

I am sure everyone shares my confusion with the Imperial system of measurement, but I hear the "HK G36 handguard-vent-hole" system of measurement is very reliable. I wonder what the vh to mm conversion is.

There may be one available soon. Not from the US, so it should be easy to get. I had someone on HK pro wanting to sell or trade their K barrel for an SL8 barrel, so I have refered him to here. You could check out HK pro and contact him directly if you don't want to wait. Its a private sale, not a company.

I had the G36 out again this morning. I'm very impressed with the accuracy I am getting. I am shooting a little better with it than with the Swiss Arms carbine.

The top barrel is the SL8 barrel shroud and barrel cut down from 510mm to 470mm.

Temporarily attached is the G36K barrel (318mm) and shroud. I trust that clears up the 'confusion' officer.

I care not if you are legally compliant or not, but what I do care about is people looking at your SL8 and thinking "oh, I like how short that barrel is, I'll cut mine down to that size. It will still be unrestricted. The guy claims it is, so why won't it?" and then when they do that, they get caught with a prohib device and bad things happen.

You claim that the barrel length was unrestricted at the K length shown. It is not. It is restricted, and you cannot cut the SL8 barrel down to that length legally. So it would be prudent if you did not mislead people into thinking that that G36K length barrel is un-restricted and that one can cut down the SL8 barrel to that length, because it is not.

I'm a biologist, not an "officer" of anything.

All valid points and good info. I should have slid in a LOL or happy face. I tend to write like I talk, as such there are times I think I'm being incredibly witty and it translates in text, even to me later, as just sarcastic (which coincidentally is not beyond me either... but thats another story).

Thanks for the clarification though...:D (genuinely, not sarcastically)

No problem, and thanks for not being an ass about my concern for the children. :)

Know of anywhere I could get a G36K barrel too? Or any G36 barrel? or even just a G36 bayonet lug?
