Drawback to Cooper's opinion

Jeff Cooper once opined that he thought all men, who would refer to themselves as such, should be competent with a rifle, automobile, and small airplane. .

There is a downside to Jeff Cooper's thinking. With the state of farming in the Western Provinces, various groups are setting up crisis lines for farmers.

I was feeling a bit depressed the other day, and called one. I managed to get their Call Center in Pakistan. When I told them at the other end that I was depressed and feeling a bit suicidal, they got real excited, and asked me if I could drive a truck or fly a plane. :D

Funny thing is that I have been shooting since 1953, I have both an American and a Canadian Pilot's license, and live in Manitoba. If you don't drive a pick up truck when you are west of the Ontario Border, you ain't didly.

As far as the original post to this thread, the question was valid. How many of us bought a rifle second hand, with no instructions, and were puzzled by certain aspects of it's operation? Just because we have been shooting for years and have gained a fair bit of experience dosen't give us the right to put down or turn off newcomers to the sport. These new guys are the ones who are going to have to carry on after we are gone. Encourage them, not put them down!

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects!

I prefere Heinlein's take on it.

I like that one too, but sometimes I find Heinlein can be a bit demanding. I love his writing, but I often doubt that he was the renaissance man that Hugh Farnham or Lazarus Long were.
