What is the idea behind the slab sided barrel on some Rugers, it it to decrease the weight?

As in the P4GCMKIII? Weight reduction would be one reason, but it's more likely to be a cosmetic thing. The innards are the same as any other Mk III.

Cosmeticly I think the slab sided barrel does not look as good as the bull barrel. But that's just me. Maybe some scroll work or something on the slab would look better.

I bought a MkII slabside over a regular bull barrelled version of their 6 7/8" Government 'cause I thought it looked better. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Also, at the time the slabside barrel was a bit of a novelty and not too many Ruger .22's had them.

Not just you, me too. I think slab barrel look ugly. If Ruger make their rimfire pistol a normal semi look, I will buy one in a heart beat.

What do you mean semi look? Do you mean certerfire semiauto handgun? The ruger mk2 is made that way for function, accuracy(fixed barrel), and cost of manufacture. Its one of the most reliable 22rimfire handguns out there.

Im the oposite... if they made something like that scaled up into a .32auto... I would hit that!

I don't mind this fluted one.

This one is supposed to feel like a 1911.

Yes they are very reliable and I like the way how it shoot, shot MKII many times and I like them but never make up my mind to buy one. Ruger has been making those pistol for long long time and I thing they should bring in new looking rimfire pistol instead of the same thing.
