Ok. Because I have a hard time focusing on irons these days, I'm looking for a decent general purpose optic for my 858. If I had the cash, I'd pick up a 1-4x24 Trijicon Accupoint with the BAC reticle, but since I'm not only a cheap SOB, but on a budget, I'm looking at other options.

Another optic that I've taken a shining to is the Milett DMS-1, but it's a tank, so I'm open to other options, preferably in the sub $400 range.

I'd like to use this 858 as a general purpose do it all gun, from gophers to white tail, service rifle, and if I decide to get into some CQB or other run & gun shooting for gits & shiggles, it'll have to work there too. Something that isn't overly cluttered would make me happiest. I'm not too keen on a reflex right now, so all you TRS-25/T-1/Eotech fanboys can stop right there. :p

My perfect world optic for this rifle is a 1-4x variable, and a fairly short one at that.

Though I believe they have 1/2 moa click adjustments, Leupold makes their VX-1 shotgun/muzzleloader scope in a 1-4x20. Frontier has them for $290 shipped. You said youre not to keen on a reflex but how about a decent red dot? I picked up a Vortex Strikefire from a local shop for $175, its got a 4 moa dot and a 2x magnifier. Its crystal clear outside and the dot is bright. The lowest setting, aside from NV, is almost too bright for inside, and visible outside on a sunny day, the brightest setting is visible in the sky beside the sun!

You said that you would prefer a variable scope 1x 4x but maybe you could consider a POSP 4x scope, scope and the mounting rail under 400$. Have a look here http://www.interammo.com/shop/ Its a excellent mounting system, rail require drilling 2 holes in the left side of the receiver but its easy to do, hold zero, excellent optic.:)

Not an option. I think the side mounts look nasty, despite holding true to the ComBloc form. I've already made up my mind about the NEA Cantilever setup, just trying to figure out the glass.

Could probably find an aimpoint in your price range if you didn't need the magnification. Far better than irons.

That's the thing, I like magnification. Short of a buddy of mine in the USMC doing unspeakable acts to get one in my hands, I doubt I'd ever justify the coin on one.

Well, variable power optics aren't a cheap route, especially those that crank down near one power (Trijicon, NF, S+B, Leupold etc). Plenty of decent and cheap fixed 3 or 4 power scopes out there.
Where are you mounting this? If it is a hand guard mount, you might not get adequate eye relief necessary from a variable power optic. So back to a 'scout scope' or a red dot.

It'll be a cantilever mount off the rear end. NEA style.

Right here..

I am currently waiting for a Weaver 1-3x; apparently it's a true 1x, we'll see.
Made in Japan though so I'm quite happy about that.

But been two months now it's supposed to come into the country with the next big Weaver optic shipment :(

Interesting options, Farmboy. I am curious to know if anyone has used a Crossfire or Diamondback, or even the SPARC with the magnifier attached, and would be able to provide insights.

The Sparc with magnifier attached is like trying to look through a dime when it's mounted in a scout position. It was better when mounted close to your eye, but not by much.

I dont use the doubler that came with my strikefire. Like Stevo said, it seriously reduces FOV, plus it adds 2 lenses to look through which reduces the clarity a noticable amount. It needs to be really close to your eye to get any magnification, scout mounting almost de-magnifies the image. The sight itself is great however. Crystal clear and a brightness setting for every situation.

Well, after much humming and hawing, I've decided to go with the DMS-1. If it doesn't ride right, I'll just have to get back to working on my M14 and mount it on that. Or buy an AR-15 :p
