I have been seeing a few custom guns with sleaved barrels and have been scratching my head trying to figure out why? There has to be some crazy explanation out thier somewhere. Who's got one for me?

Thanks,

Neil

There are few companies that are providing carbon fiber sleeves for some barrels. The barrel is contoured much thinner and the outer shell is made of the carbon fiber; there are a handful of barrel companies that will produce the barrels with the necessary contour for the sleeving, but the majority of barrel makers won't... probably for good reason, but who really knows for sure. Intuitively it sounds like a bad idea.

At the end of the day, you have a thinly contoured barrel that may not be what you want or need for your particular shooting application.

I couldn't figure it out. Not as if I wanted one or anything, just trying to figure out what all the fuss was about.

Seems like something belongs on a 10/22 but not an actual hunting rifle.

If you mean tensioned barrels, the idea is to control or tune the vibrations of a barrel without going to very heavy contours.

If you mean carbon fibre wrapped barrels, an idea that doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

There's an article about carbon wrapped barrels in the resent issue of Shooting Times. They are suppose to dissipate heat more efficiently.

I don't know, I think it is actually a combination of the increased surface area and the mass (thickness) of the barrel which contributes to the slower buildup of heat, and the different vibration of the barrel, which is the whole point of heavier barrels re accuracy. Not being a physicist, I could be wrong though. FWIW - dan

The mass of a varmint barrel for heat dissipation with the weight of a sporter barrel for carrying. - dan

The mass and weight of a barrel are essentially the same if you are comparing them on the same planet at the same place. The weight of a barrel becomes less on the moon but its mass stays the same. Weight refers to the effect gravity has on an object where mass is a comparison to a known reference. For example 1 liter of water has a mass of 1000 grams on earth and 1000 grams on the moon. The same liter of water weighs 2.2 lbs on earth but only weighs 0.367 lbs on the moon.
