Going to go Slide mounted Optic on a CZ 85 Combat. I am looking at these two: -Burris Fastfire III vs Vortex Venom Red Dot

Any thoughts on either, experience etc would be appreciated.

Wolverine has both and will buy from them. They do provide excellent service to us.

Bob, I don't have any experience with red dots on a pistol yet but I have been reading about them............
In that price range, my choice would go towards the Vortex or the Mini Shield.
If I was going with the Vortex, I would buy the Viper instead of the Venom. 6 MOA instead of 3 MOA. Larger dot for fast shooting but you might prefer a smaller dot for precision shooting.
OK

Venoms are awesome, own a couple, love mine on the TWN pistol carbine (needs Riser), have used it as 45 degree angle red dot(more money than needed for something I never use lol)... have tried them on pistols and agree 6moa on your pistol is the better route.

Also love the life time warranty don't baby these things!

Thanks guys keep it coming. With a slight cataract in my right eye the dot tend to hallow a bit so I may go with the 3MOA on the theory the dot will be slightly larger due to the effects of the cataract. Now I have something to think about. I have a Vortex Sparc on my CX4 Storm and have had excellent service from Vortex. Their business model is to replace rather than repair.

I've got a Venom on a Sig 226. I've only got around 200rnds downrange with it but so far it's still holding zero. Figured with their warranty, if it went wonky, I'll just get it replaced by Vortex. It's just for plinking so doesn't matter if it breaks on me.

Slight sidetrack I know, but how did you mount it?

CZCustom and Springer Precision out of the US make dovetail mounts for the Burris and Vortex. I bought my mount from Springer $45.US. + $11 shipping.

It should arrive here next week. I have to order my sight this week as well.

OST sells (or sold if they still carry 'em) CADEX 226 mounts for them. You'll need to buy metric screws or rethread the base plate. I picked up screws from the local RC shop along with washers. Keep in mind that there are different sizes of the 226 rear dovetail. The 22LR slide differs from the stock P226 which differs from the Elite series.

This is a stock P226 slide on my Elite Dark lower. The drawback is the RDS sits a bit higher over the bore so it takes a few mags to get the feel of looking over the slide. I might have the slide milled down to mount the RDS directly to it.

I've got astigmatism and cataracts and I've found that the flaring of the dots is less noticeable if I go with a larger dot size.

I put a Burris Fastfire 3 on my daughters Girsan, she likes it alot, no issues after many hundreds of rounds. The burris mount replaces the rear sight, clean looking and compact.

I run Burris Fastfire III's on numerous handguns and carbines in 9mm, .45ACP, and 5.56mm calibres, all without issue. The 8 MOA dot works very well for pistols and CQB carbines, with the large, crisp dot easily acquired and placed on target. The 3 MOA dots are great for mid-range carbines, where the cheek-weld assists with rapidly acquiring the smaller dot. I have had zero mechanical/electrical failures, however I have run out of elevation adjustment and had to shim several pistol mounts to ensure that they were parallel with the bore.

The Trijicon RMR and Vortex Razor Mini Red Dot Sights (MRDSs) are superior in terms of their ruggedized chassis, and can likely stand more external abuse. But for basic square range work, the Burris Fastfire III MRDS is good to go at a more moderate/affordable price. At least that has been my experience. YMMV...

As long as the mount remains secure the slide mount RDS are great. I have a Springer mount for the Norinco and Beretta 92. The SW Pro Core is built in. I did have 2 lenses fail, one a Burris FF3, the other a Dokter. Both failed with less than 500 rounds. The replacements have been trouble free for 1,000+. I do get some paint chips/dings on the edge which I believe is from ejected cases. This was both on the Norinco and my S&W Core. in slow motion video it doesn't look like it hits it at all, but something is taking the paint off.

OK I have decided to go with the Vortex Viper with a 6MOA Dot. I took your suggestions to heart as I intend to use one of either a CZ85 Combat or a Shadow as the base pistol and play IDPA NFC with the gun and for fun IPSC Open at our local Club Matches. The set up should work well for local Steel shoots down in Kitimat as well.
