Slide show: Using airguns in Rehab center

Carlos,

Thanks for setting this up.

Let me fill in a little background:

This session was the first step in an initiative involving the Quebec Wheelchair Sports Association and the Quebec Shooting Federation.

The goal is to do outreach airgun clinics in the main rehab hospitals. Attract a few enthusiasts. And eventually to build a club meeting regularly.

This first workshop had 14 participants displaying a wide range of disabilities. It was, in the opinion of the coordinator from Wheelchair Sports, the most successful single rehab workshop she has ever been associated with.

Shooting is absolutely ideal as a rehab sport. It can be practised long before full strength is recovered, and in the case of rifle shooting, it can be practised by nearly anyone, off a rest. We had, for instance, one guy who could not lift the gun and who was pulling the trigger with his thumb. And he had a very respectable group!

Naturally we also had a couple of guys who knew firearms from their hunting and service days. Lots of enthusiasm there.

And the ladies working at the hospital in ergo and physo and recreation all tried and agreed that air pistol is a lot of fun.

No legal problem. No permits. No noise. Little dirt. A minimum of bullet stopping material.

In short, this is an initiative that shows great promise. Good for the disabled in rehab and good for the promotion of our sport.

Thanks again to all of the shooters who gave their time to come and coach these folks, one-on-one, from the firing line.

I friend of mine described shooting as the sport of controlled nonmovement. Giving citizens opportunities to attempt sport is the goal of all organized sports; just some are more suited for less mobile athletes.

My father visited a blind shooting program somewhere in his travels. The rifle was mounted on a ball and socket. The barrel was contained within an electrified ring, which was both a safety limiter and the source of a feedback tone for the shooter. When the barrel was centred, the tone in headphones was lowest. Just like benchrest, the smallest group wins. He said it was a challenge for even a skilled shooter.

Had really good first timer tonight.

It took forever to get two rifles from them that complied with the idiotic regulations. I believe they had to me modified.
Not sure if Air Force wants to go through that again.

Not specific to this particular gun, but there are instructions on the net on how to modify speed on other air powered (as oppose to spring powered) guns, and shorten hammer spring is one of the methods, which is easily done by yourself.
