Sliding vs. folding stock

I recently picked up a 14" hp9 and want to make a sliding or folding stock on a cnc mill I have access to, to bring the oal down to 26". I will probably design it to accept ar15 grips. This is just for myself, not to sell - this mill is way too small to use commercially, plus it's in our living room :p.

So my question is, for those who have used both styles of stock or even just one, which did you like better and any key things I should keep in mind for the design? The biggest challenge I see is keeping it compact and light but rigid and strong.

I'll post up some preliminary 3d models once I settle on a style.

Thanks!

No. The biggest challenge will be getting all the milling chips out of the living-room carpet.

i've used a few different folding stocks (butler creek, chinese stock) and found my biggest issue (s) were:
not locking up tight - wobble both up and down, a butler creek I had was terrible for this, to solve the problem, the set screw had to be tightened to the point that the stock would not fold. - to remedy, I would suggest maximizing the surface area of contact between the folding mechanism and the stock. try making the contact/locking mech vertical rather than horizontal. (look at an XCR folding stock mechanism to see what i mean)

hard to get a proper cheek weld on folders- often they are skeletonized to reduce weight/help with folding, and can be painful, wrap them in paracord to reduce this or maybe something that after the stock is folded, can be flipped up to provide a check weld.

LOP on folders is too short - this is a personal preference, but they are short and angled to prevent interfering with the pump when folded.

just my 0.02 and experience with them.

oh, for the sliding are you considering something like a mp5 sliding (reduction to pistol grip) or standard AR?

My preference has always been an adjustable sliding stock.

It s good cuz other people that try out my shotguns and M4 have different arm lengths.

For me 14" LOP is far too long for 3 gun and practical. 11.5 -12" is more for my liking with a tactical vest on.

A folding stock usually doesnt have enough footprint for my face as well( usually they are just a small diameter metal or alu bar.

I have used the M4 style of stock for all my tactical arms giving me a consistent "feel" when I use any of them.

Ive done plenty shooting w/ both styles. My preference is easily sliding/ telescopic. And lets be honest- telescopic looks 100 times better too.

My 2 cents. Colt

Go fo a sliding/telscoping stock, if you're already planning to use a AR15 grip you might as well do something like the one on top in the picture above, that way all you really have to do is make a one piece adapter and then add a grip, buffer tube and stock of your choice.

Awesome, thanks for input, let me try to respond to all..

It's enclosed so it's not too bad, plus I have to justify the shop vac somehow.

Yes, something like the mp5 is what I had in mind, perhaps collapsible would be a better word. The standard AR won't get me down to 26" I don't think.

Ya, after getting slapped in the face by the standard stock from some 3" slugs, this has been on my mind too. I was considering either a folding mechanism on an AR style stock, or a collapsible stock like the mp5 but with wider sliding bars. It's tricky though, can't be too wide or it will cover the ejection port and I want it to be functional in pistol grip configuration.

Agreed, it looks better. What did you like more about it other than that?

If I was going for exactly that I would just buy it off the shelf, not trying to entirely reinvent the wheel here. The problem is that won't get me down to the 26" I'm looking for. But I am trying to use available parts where I can, like the grip for sure, and if it was going to be a folder, maybe just adding a hinge to the AR buffer tube.

The folder one tends to get caught in a lot of sh!t when you are carrying it.

Ya, I can see that might be an issue. Partly why I'm leaning towards the sliding style. It would be nice to be able to use it in a drop leg holster or scabbard and have it fit and not catch, so I'm trying to keep it sleek. And yes, I realize one of those may be purely tacticool and not effective given the barrel length .

that is a good call, however, are you planning on mounting a side saddle? I guess the one good point of the folding over the sliding would be that you can have a saddle mounted.

also! just had a brainwave here, maybe try including some kind of sling mount on the side, above the pistol grip. not enough stock adapters have an integral one.

I'm curious to see the results of this project.... please take process/ work in progress pics so we can see this come together ! also to see the justification of the shop vac.

don't worry about practical, tactical is the new practical.:nest: haha kidding.

Get the best of both worlds. We sell a folding adapter for the AR threads, Collapse & fold. You should make 26" with a 14" barrel. Check it out HERE.

Not to hijack, but what stock is on the SBS pictured in the top most shotgun? That looks amazing! Where can I get itttt?

Sorry to hi jack this thread BUT I would be interested in possibly purchasing that unfinished project.

Please email my CGN account the pics at your convenience.
