A friend has a carcano with set triggers.

The fired brass is about .008 bigger at the web than the new Norma brass, and the case is usually failed. There is a very thin flange on the barrel to set the barrel back, and it is an interesting rifle, so we are looking for suggestions. Is there a cache of used barrels for these things?
Thanks

Haven't posted a pic for a long time, took a couple of tries. I am thinking running a 6.5 swede reamer in the chamber might fix things.. What do you guys think.

It's a "Cooey Carcano" made by Cooey for Eatons between the wars. They are normally chambered in 6.5 MS. Reaming to 6.5x55 will cause a host of problems such as the boltface being too small (and probably not enough "meat" to enlarge it), clips no longer working, feeding problems, etc. I don't know what brass you used in it - probably 6.5x52 Carcano.

my goodness, I was offered one like that the other day from a friend of mine. He bought the rifle and it came with one round of ammunition, and Corlanes found him a box of Norma 6.5 Carcano. The round that came with the rifle went in the stripper clip easy but we had to fight the Norma rds in. Chambered the first round and fired perfectly but had trouble chambering the Norma ammunition. Same set triggers and sporterized stock. He offered it to me for $100 with the ammo and stripper clips, but I need to figure out exactly what its chambered for first. All the brass was headstamped 6.5 Carcano. The front sight set screw backed out and got lost, so the front sight fell off on the way home and the rear sight is held on with a cracked chrome band and it slides around quite a bit. Its a basket case for sure but has potential. Any more info you guys can offer? Searching isnt turning up too much for me.

The norma brass never chamberes very well in a carcano, The neck is a little too rounded, but after running them through my dies with difficulty and scraping off some metal, They work just fine. its chambered in 6.5x52, and 100$ isnt a bad deal, Just ammo is a bit tricky to find.

The problem this one having is the chamber is oversized, or norma brass is undersized....Too bad as it is a cute little rifle...

that would make sense, it is just stamped 6.5, it does not say ms, or x52 or x54...We will try a ms round and see if that works any better. The bore is in quite good shape, perhaps it will be accurate.

"...a cache of used barrels for these things?..." No. There's no cache of barrels for any milsurp any more.

I have an extra barrel. Not a big deal to replace. It's threaded into a stub like this, and indexed (and headspaced) in place with a set-screw, something like modern Savage firearms:

is there anything you can make ms brass out of?

Yes - typically 6.5x52 works fine. If as you suggest, fired 6.5x52 Carcano brass is bulged 8 thou above the web, then you have an oversized chamber and 6.5x54 MS brass will do much the same thing. To be honest, something doesn't jive here, because 8 thou is not hugely oversized, certainly not anywhere near enough to split the case on first firing. Can you post (clear, close-up) pics of the brass?
