I've heard about sewing a big ass button on the shoulder of your coat so the sling doesn't slide off.

That being said I use Uncle Mike's mountain slings on my rifles, I find they're pretty grippy. Plus I usually have a hold of the sling with my hand anyways.

Maybe my shoulder is built funny, but I end up walking with my thumb hooked around my sling to keep it from sliding off. Does the Butler Creek sling help with this. I used to have a leather sling on my rifle, cuts into your shoulder after a while. The sling I have replaced it with has a wider pad for the shoulder and is more comfortable, but still slides. I haven't tried the Sling around the neck, gun in front deal. It could very well get you into action faster.

Spectre 3 point sling ( available from Daves Surplus) is the cats ass for long hikes with a rifle.

*Note, I know you did not want "hang in front" slings, but the 3 point offers a variety of carry positions, and it's very versatile. I have one on my hunting rifle, I recommend it 100%, and other guys in my hunting camp have jumped on the bandwagon.

You may take a look a Tactical Intervention M24 sling. Awesome piece of equipment. You can have it loose enough to carry your rifle across your back, and use it for slung position with the quick cuff.

Sling for serious walking?

I prefer the other kind: silly walking

I like the plain old 1" webbing ones ButtlerCreek sells. has a little no slip strip sewn in. stays on my shoulder well.

X2, that's all I buy any more, only I use the 1.25" ones. When you're stalking, still hunting, or on a watch they roll up nice and tight and fit in your pocket.

A long time ago foxer posted about a carry sling with the butt fitting into it,i don't think anyone but him would be able to find it within all his posts tho but he seems to have a memory that clings on like a steel trap.:runaway:

For me a rifle sling needs to be more than a carrying strap because I also like the sling to be a shooting aid. The sling I chose is the Safari Ching Sling made by Galco. It features a single strap split on the length through the center so essentially you have 2 straps joined at each end. Joining the two straps in the center is a short "U" shape strap. When carrying the rifle slung, the thumb can be hooked into the U strap to keep the sling positioned on the shoulder. When shooting from a supported position, the U strap is pulled up high on the back of the supporting arm.

When walking with a pack, I prefer to keep my rifle accessible. My solution is to carry the rifle on top of the pack or let it ride in the space between the pack and the back of my shoulders. The sling hangs loosely in front of my chest. When crossing difficult obstacles, I'll either carry the rifle in my hands or leave it positioned between the pack and my shoulders.

Check out the Calde Ridge website and look for sling model no SSPM5. Sounds like it might be the ticket. Saw this demonstrated at the last April gun show in Kamloops. I was gonna get one but I couldnt get near the table so I went away and bought a rifle...

That sling I mentioned earlier is the "viper" sling.
Allows front carry, and shoulders without removing the sling.
