I was quite interested in discovering:
6.6 For all 3GN Regional matches the use of a sling is allowed and may be required to complete a stage or a Course of Fire (COF).
So, you may HAVE to use a sling. Just curious as to thoughts on this from a safety perspective and why you would design a COF that made someone use a sling?

Slung guns are proven "safe" beforehand...

Once charged, if you break 180 or point your muzzle where no muzzle should be pointed... DQ.

Most times I have shot with a sling the gun was either completely empty, or empty chamber. Nothing unsafe about it.

Slings are somewhat common south of the border, but here most MDs would rather not have them (opting for dump bins and staging areas instead)

Onagoth speaks truth.

That said... Every time I come across a stage where slings are required I groan... If there's an option or choice between sling/staging I go with staging.
Slings are great for standing around looking cool, but they're a PITA when your runnin ' an ' gunnin...

I'm not actually a huge fan of slings as it is....usually my shotgun is too large to be slung very well (hits the ground) and my rifle takes a beating when traversing obstacles. I'd prefer to shoot staged guns, but it comes down to the challenge the MD wants to present.

Exactly! Which is why I was surprised to see that you can be forced to use a sling - kinda goes against the principle of freestyle.

I just shot a 3G (not 3GN) match in the US. A sling was required on one stage. Start position was shotgun loaded at low ready, EMPTY rifle slung. On start, engage shotgun targets, dump shotgun in barrel, climb ladder (alum ext ladder) to shooting platform and engage rifle targets. The RO's had a stair-access platform beside the shooting platform to observe and take your rifle when finished. Staging the rifle at the top would have added considerable time. Climbing the ladder without the rifle slung would have been unsafe. (Climbing a ladder with ANY tool in one hand is unsafe) The rifle is considered a 'dead stick' until the magazine is inserted - so no worries of sweeping while climbing. Typically, this range uses the stair-access platform for shooting, but decided to change it up a little.

In my mind "freestyle" is an ipsc thing... The kind of 3gun I believe is being talked about here is not ipsc.

I don't like using slings, but if the CoF calls for it... 'Guess I'm slingin'.

...even if it means I gotta put up with that "tactical" extended charging handle stickin' me in the spine or worse... In the solar plexus if I sling in front... I hate that.

We used a sling on one stage at Superstition Mountain last week... Rifle was cleared and slung at the beginning of the stage, which required the shooter to shoot and dump the shotgun then climb a ladder to the rifle shooting position with the rifle slung. 180 rule applied after the rifle was un-unslung and loaded. Good thing to have and practice every now and then, but it hasn't been a major feature of any of the matches I have gone to.

I think it ultimately depends on your training to determine which shooting style is more familiar to you. I trained with a sling and carried with a sling before I ever started competing or recreational sport shooting so I am actually more comfortable slung than unslung when carrying a rifle. Admittedly, I am a 3gun noob with only a couple matches under my belt and I haven't come across a stage that required it...However, in ORA CQB and Infidel Gunfighter League matches (if you ever get to one of these matches in the North Carolina, they are awesome) slings are required and shooters are shooting while slung. I have not witnessed an accident yet.
