Faux -Pas? Don't think so, maybe in this country, certainly not in Continental Europe!
Many European shotguns ,( some very high end) come with a set of sling swivels in the box with them, and slinging a shotgun IMO is not a fashion thing but a very necessary thing to do for several reasons.
We hunt waterfowl with O/U's and other guns, and when you are slugging decoys or picking up birds in a field , quite often you are going to get surprised by single birds or small groups coming in.
This is where it is very nice to be able to keep your shotgun 0on your shoulder.
Even in the uplands over a flushing dog I often use a slung shotgun, and never had a problem getting a shot off as was stated, you only need to pay attention to the dog to be able to know what is actually going on!
You do not absolutely have to D&T a swivel onto the barrel ribs, as was stated, Uncle mikes sells the clamp on styles, and you can buy slip on style slings as well that you can transfer from one gun to another.

The reason to sling is this: I will be hunting in places where I will be walking quite a ways, but I will not need to be carrying it ready to shoot while walking. I've carried my O/U for a nice little hike through the woods without a sling, and in my personal opinion, if someone can put a sling on a gun and carry it slung, instead of carrying it with two or even one hand, they are a smart person for carrying it on a sling.
I don't think the wood on the fore-end is thick enough to counter-sink and put a sling swivel on, so a barrel band or velcro or slip-on is my only real option, and I've ordered the Uncle Mikes, so we'll see how that goes.
As far as the "quieter" comment, unless I am carrying it loaded, which isn't my preference, loading an OU and loading a pump-action are significantly different: click and snick, versus CHA-CHUNK.

Slinging a shotgun can be handy under certain circumstances. I never thought slings on a shotgun were worth the effort. But I am a convert under these circumstances: 1) Lugging a shotgun back in the bush when fishing with the wee ones, as I haven't figured out how to flyfish and carry my M37 without the sling. 2) Duck hunting, lugging all the decoys and stuff to the blind is a lot easier when the shotgun is slung. and 3) deer hunting in slug only zones.
In England in my experience the slings are taken off the shotgun when in active use (if they have them), but slling swivels are very rare on UK shotguns. Shotguns are typically cased a on driven shoots when moving betwen drives.
Slings are pretty common on continental shotguns and combination guns. I haven't hunted over there, so I can't say what they do.

Curious here - is the area a buckshot zone for deer? I am not familiar with the regs on the island. Are you planing on slugs and buckshot or just buckshot? Have you played around with buckshot and choke combinations?

Hi All,
I am planning to take my 12ga. over/under deer hunting in the shot-only areas here on Vancouver Island. I definitely prefer to use this vs. my 870 due to noise and choke options.
However, last time I took my O/U hunting I ended up carrying it broken over my shoulder, and this was, to say the least, tedious.
I am wondering about this groups' experiences and recommendations for carrying this shotgun with a sling.
I could mount a sling swivel stud on the stock. I cannot mount a stud on the fore-end.
It shouldn't make a difference, as the challenge/solution should be the same for almost any O/U, but it's a Stevens 512 Goldwing (reasonable, yet effective).
Any suggestions, pointers or recommendations are appreciated!
