So I want to put a sling on my SxS I'm wondering whats the best way to go about it. My only real option is to get the front mount soddered on. I'm wondering is there a mount I should look at for this and is there anyway to make it a swivel or is it just a FIXED mount. Depending on advice here I may do it my self. Guns a savage/stevens 311

The Germans had forward sling studs soldered to the underside of the rib and a stud in the stock. There's no good way to make it swivel around though. I don't think anyone makes a solder-on base with an functional swivel in it.

I have to ask, WTF do you want to put a sling on an upland shotgun for?

I do lots of hiking and now snow shoeing and I'm not always looking to take shots at something at the moment plus some of the terrain I walk in you want both hands free or you might lose an eye or end up at the bottom of the hill. I've lost sunglasses in the past before I took up hunting on my walks. I can think of about 10 reasons I'd want a sling on my shotguns.

There are sling swivel studs that attach via 2 screws to the steel rib ( sometimes called a gib strip) that is soldered to the underside of the barrels barrels on most SxS's. I just attached one to a Spanish gun.

Would making a sling be a possibility? I'm thinking something similar to what you see on some blackpowder mountain rifles where a band of cloth is laced over the butt/wrist on the butt, then another band of cloth is laced over the barrel. I think as long as the sling isn't too long it can be loose and slide along the barrel, but probably better if tightened.

If I ever get initiative I want to make one for my .50 cap and ball mountain rifle, as it's darn heavy to carry in front of you through anything denser than a mowed lawn :p

I've actually made one for my .22 lever and my Single shot, shotgun. The only difference is that the 311 gas a very LOW profile chrome bead and any slings I have made at present make is so you can't see the front bead at all.
