Slings

I'm tired of using slings that slip off my shoulder. I bought an Ebelestock so I could carry my rifle but found it slow to remove from the scabbard.

Has anyone tried a Stalker Sling or the Xpert Sling (or a similar one)? I'm curious how if they work and if they can be used with a backpack.

I have attached 2 photos because I dont want to provide non-sponsor links.

I’ve always used sling I make, simple leather slings. They seem to stay put somewhat, this spring I bought a Vorn pack that have a rifle carry system that is really slick and easy to use, to got the rifle out no need to take the pack off! Anyway, I’ve seen the one in the second picture, i think it is a great idea, should work really well!

Check out Ultimate sling I have several love them ! No slippage
That's what I was looking for and doesn't look like one of the cheap Chinese ones I found.

Is it possible to wear a mid-sized pack with these and is there a Canadian distributor? I tried searching and couldn't find one.

No I believe I ordered them directly yes you can do a lot of stuff with them even split it and have it over both shoulders they were very good to deal with
Cheers Tony

Thanks! I see they make an extended version. I'll order one and pick it up in the US after Christmas. The border waits are ridiculous in December.

Made my own stalker style sling a while back. It gives me truly hands free ability to climb, trail clear and ride dubble on a quad. I found attaching it below the pistol grip takes pressure of the shoulder too, nice on old bones on long hikes.

When I bought my first rifle in the early 1970's after I was getting my own paycheques and could afford to buy new hunting and fishing stuff instead of the used rifles Dad had provided me with up until that time, I put a shiny new Brownell's Latigo sling on it. That's all that's been on my hunting rifles ever since.

Back then as soon as I left the vehicle the Trapper Nelson was on my back - that great destroyer of Canadian youth's backs for decades. It replaced a metal American packboard Dad had gotten for me from some surplus store and Mom covered with canvas.

The problem with the new shoulder straps on the Trapper Nelson was that they had a slick surface finish as they didn't have any wear on them yet, and so the shiny smooth leather of my sling left me constantly hitching my rifle back up on my shoulder.

The easy fix (I can't remember if it was my bright idea or I saw somebody else do it) was to raid Mom's button box. I sewed a big button onto the Trapper Nelson's shoulder strap on each side. Sling your rifle with the sling on your shoulder inboard of where you've sewn the button and it's not going anywhere unless you want it to go somewhere. No added weight, no added straps, no cost if you grew up with a Mom that had a button box that had buttons for work clothes and coats.

Been 50+ years now and I have different packframes and at times hunt with just the knapsack itself rather than holding my stuff while attached to the pack frame. But everything I use for hunting that has straps on it has a big sturdy button the straps to retain my sling..

There's a guy just across the border in Montana who makes a little bent metal device that you slip onto your pack that does the same thing as a large enough button. But at the gun show in Kalispell a few months ago, the price wasn't too bad, but whatever it was it wasn't so inexpensive I bought one to try out.

A lot of the Trapper Nelsons and firehose packboards I used had shoulder straps made out of old flattened water hose. They were very wide and distributed the load well. Those plus the tump line made hauling 100 lb loads over rough ground doable.

For 20 something males anyway..........

I've had the same problem carrying a rifle and backpack. I solved mine by purchasing a sling hook (brand name) that velcros to the pack near the top of the shoulder. Works like a charm.

I have 3D printed these for all the guys I hang out with. They all use them. Deffinately very useful.
Printed two versions, bottom is the best

I needed to be hands free as I often have two dogs on leases with me. Nothing worked, so I bought some 1 1/4 heavy poly-cotton belt material and experimented with some different ideas. Hardware is mostly salvaged.

Ended up with something similar to the Hello Materials sling. I found I didn't need a lot of adjust-ability so ended up with a simple set it and forget it sling. The poly-cotton material is cheap, comfortable and has good grip while the back strap keeps it in place when moving around.

If you don't mind abusing the wife's sewing machine, they don't take long to put together.

Kifaru gun bearer is really hard to beat if you want to carry a rifle hands free while wearing a pack but still have quick access to it. There's also the frankenstud sling keeper that goes on your pack strap or you can just buy a cheap drawer pull from home depot.
