I recently picked up a Sig 226 and I have noticed that the slide serrations suck, my hands slip over them when they are a little sweaty. Anyone else notice this? What did you do to combat this. Skateboard tape?

question when you rack the slide do you rack it over handed or under handed?

Rack over handed is a bad habit and your grip on the slide is not as solid

Most well trained military guys wear gloves while shooting too

I rack with my thumb and index finger only. I have had no issues with any guns including my duty issue M&P. However, this is the only gun that has given me this problem.

Shooting with gloves is not an option for me.

looks like your "wrong way" ...is the right way to rack the slide...

He also describes the sling shot method as the preferred way...

I own several pistols, including Sig P's, H&K's, 1911's and a Glock.

I don't find a whole lot of difference, with the grip/grasp slide surface area on any of them. In fact, I find the rear of the slide of my MK23 slicker than some of the others. The black coating they use is more smooth/slick than the likes of park, matte blue, etc.

When shooting at the range/practice, I basically just grasp the slide on any of my auto's, pull firmly back (I use the fore finger/thumb when racking the slide at the range), and let her go!

I've never noticed much difference with any of mine.

If gloves don't suit you, consider doing what I do.

Because our range has very limited wash up areas, I keep those wet wipe packs in my range bag.
Before I shoot I wipe my hands down using one, then dry up using a paper towel. (Flame Suit ON!) LOL

I find this really helps to increase my grip on the gun, slide...........h*ll.......anything I handle for a while after!

After I'm done shooting I use another to clean up the grime from reloading, GSR, etc.

I'm not sure about others, but before I started doing this, after shooting on hot days I found my hands felt dirty/sticky after shooting a lot of pistol rounds from all the associated grime.

I haven't had a problems with the slide serrations on the P226 at all. I was using it for my BB course and my first couple of IPSC matches in the hot sun which makes for real sweaty hands. No problems what so ever.

This is how I've been taught...overhand is the correct way.

Not the "slingshot."

By multiple instructors as well, from IPSC, IDPA to LE/Millitary trainers.

Hmmmm.... odd never seen any Canadian SF or Army unit teach the over hand. I have always been taught Sling shot method.

I guess each there own

Anywho, back to the issue at hand, anyone else have this issue with sweaty hands and slipping slide? And your solution.

One idea is put skateboard tap ontop off the slide "infront of the rear sight" This will grip against your index finger as you rack the slide.

Yea, that's pretty much what I was thinking. The 226 I got is a 1984 W. German production and it just seems like the serrations are very shallow. Could just be a first run type thing? I don't know.

I have hyper-hydrosis of the hands, so I always have sweaty hands, however this was never an issue with any other gun I have used. Just this one.

Also cant your SIG 90' to the left "homeboy style :p" when racking. This gives you a better grip on the slide and allows the side of your index finger to butt against the rear sight.

Of course return your pistol back 90' while your punching it forward towards your target.

Lol, yea, I tried that at the range the other day, the only thing helping me rack was the rear sight, my fingers still slipped to the back of the serrations though.

I just do not want to develop any extra bad habits as if I ever have to use my duty firearm to save my life (not likely) I don't want to be attempting non-conventional things that I grew accustomed to shooting my range guns. Bad habits on the range, turn into bad habits on the street, or in requal (more likely) for that matter.
