When purchasing sloped mounts, ie Near Mfg. how much slope is appropriate to have on the mount, 1/2 the MOA elevation available from the optic, 1/4, 1/8, 1/?, ??

For example, if a scope's max elevation adjustment is 120 MOA, should the mount be 60 MOA, 40MOA, or 25 MOA.

120??

My Nightforce only has 110.

If the scopes elevation it 120, you won't need a sloped base.

The lower the elevation adjustment on the scope, the more moa you need in a base.

This is all based on shooting long range though. With most scopes you should be good out to at least 600yds.

don't forget about the CDI and LCF though. sloped bases are the "thing" right now. I'd go 25MOA I can't imagine needing more than that, especially if the scope has 120 MOA available.

Are you sure it's not 120 "clicks" which would make it 30moa if it's a 1/4" ajustment scope? Most scopes with 50-60MOA will get you out to 600 or more. After that a sloped base or sig rings and inserts are needed if you have a slow cartridge.

Unless, you plan on shooting past 1 km, precious few rifles need a sloped base even with a 308 chambering.

Just for reference, a 308 and heavier bullets need 35 to 40 min to go from 100 to 1000yds. My 7RM shooting 162gr Amax need 20min. Most 1" tubes have 40 to 60 min of travel, some 30mm have more. Even if your scope zeros in the middle of its available travel, most cartridges can go a long ways before running out of elevation adjustment.

As another frame of reference, with my 7RM and 80 min of elevation, I could shoot PAST 2000m, probably close to 2500m with internal adjustment. I wonder if you plan on shooting that far.

With 120min, I wonder how far I could go? 3 to 3.5km?

A set of Burris Sig rings w/inserts will be way easier to set up and 1/2 the price of many 'tactical' sloped bases. As to the cool factor, up to you...

20MOA is lots. 10 and 15moa does well too. Select one on where most of your shooting time will be spent. Try to keep the reticle centered as much as possible at the distance you will be shooting.........

Great guys and thanx for all the input. Now if I have it right, the more MOA adjustment capability the scope has, the less english one requires on the base. Makes sense even to me. Now, what are the consequences of overdoing it? Other than being hanged at high noon for pretentiousness  .
