Sloppy 10/22 mag

I have 2 mags for my 10/22... 1 fits snug and has zero ftf issues while the 2nd has play forward and backward and results in a ftf every 4 shots or so. Is there any mods I can do to make the other fit snug? Clearly that is what is causing the ftf's.

Are these the 10 round OEM box mags?

Yes they are the Ruger 10rnd mags.

Do you have a measuring tape or better yet vernier calipers?
Measure the good one first (LXWXH) and compare the 2nd one for differences.

When I measure them both with my vernier the "good" one is .007" longer. Clearly it is this additional length that makes it fit more snug. I guess the only way to get the "bad" one to work without ftf issues would be to somehow shim it to make it the appropriate length. Kind of sucks as these are brand new mags.

Yes it is, isn't it?. but when you are dealing with injecion moulded nylon, which these are, you can get quite a bit of shrinkage once they are pulled from the mould... the downsize of using a plastic mag.

Well the "bad" one came with the gun... I guess I could go to the local store where I bought it and see if the guy can swap me one. I'm pretty sure he is out of them so I will have to wait until he gets some in. In the meantime I'll call the guy and see what he says.

For the amount of "plastic" box mags Ruger has pushed out over the years, this one has got to be a quality control error that got by!
If you were getting that much size difference in every one, this would have been a well known rampant problem years ago.
You got a dud.... just take it back and exchange it for a new one.

It may seem little but when it comes to snug fitting components .007" can make the difference between a part moving or not.

The plunger is suppose to apply spring pressure on the back of the mag forcing it against the front index... if the mag is too short then it is no longer under spring tension and can move out of alignment causing a ftf.
