So I bought a Benelli SuperNova, 14”, collapsing stock, pistol grip.., absolutely perfect bear gun for protecting the kids when in the backcountry.
Problem is, I cannot get it to hit a XL pizza box at 30’! When I use BBB it patterns repeatedly right on target. But I dislike how the pattern opens up so fast with a 14” cylinder bore barrel.
I really wanna use slugs, I even bought the most expensive with the rifling and ballistic tip, yet they are all over the place. Is this normal coming out of a 14” barrel? What can I do differently? Or should I just stick with pellets and pray the bear runs when I sink a few in his skin..?

Anyone with knowledge in this would be a big help!

The barrel is plenty long to shoot slugs. I have a shortie zeroed at 40 yards and I can easily group within a few inches shooting offhand.

Almost definitely using the wrong slugs. Buy cheap lead rifled slugs to confirm. Can also show us a photo of the box.

I have tons of shooting experience, but this is my first go with slugs, I just mistakenly was using the wrong kind. I did have a red dot on it, I,ll do some sighting in today with some rifled slugs. it’s also got buckhorn sights.
Federal writes it so small, and on just the flap of the box, will let you know how the rifled slugs go.. curious how far out I can get? Hoping for 6” group at 75 yards, that’d be acceptable.

FFS.. I was using the wrong box, these are sabot slugs, my son has a rifled barrel..
Oops! That would explain things.

If you do your part you should be able to get in that ballpark. Shooting with a rest will help.

Note though that with a 14in barrel, you will have notably less velocity (and therefore energy) at 75yds versus the same slug from a 24in barrel. This means more drop and less "smack" on target.

Agree - mod choke on my 12.5" 870 with ghost rings groups great at 25 yards and cheap slugs. Just try different types, tighten the choke if you can, and practice makes perfect :)

Easily accomplished.
Properly sighted in, and once you get used to the gun, you'll be smashing the 10 ring out at 75 yards with slugs.
