I was planning on getting a Remington 870 12ga 28" Sportsman Field ($402 taxes in) as an entry gun to hunt turkey/birds/deer
However, I was told by the person at the counter that since it only has twin bead sights in the front I won't be able to aim if shooting slugs though it. The person suggested I get the 870 with three barrels to have a gun that can handle different situations.

1. With the twin bead w/ HiViz sight will I be able to fire slugs with enough accuracy to hit a deer in the vitals at 50 yds (if I practiced)? Also is 28" too long for turkey?

2. Here is what I figure my options are:
a. Remington 870 12ga 28" Sportsman Field (improved, mod, and full chokes) for $402
b. Remington 870 12ga 28" Sportsman Field w/ 20" fully rifled barrel with rifle sights $585
c. Remington 870 Express Trio (23" cantilever rifled, 28" barrel with modified choke, and 20" barrel with fiber optic sight and turkey choke) $613

Should I just get the 870 Sportsman Field and pick up another barrel (maybe get a used one for a bit cheaper) or go for the Express Trio?

Thanks in advance!

If your looking for a trio set, i wouldnt look at new remingtons, they are mass produced cheap guns that dont seem to last in the quality dept, ive had my Mossburg 500 in a 3 barrel set, 1 year and 3000 rounds so far on it, and no problems at all. It can also be had for about $500+tx. Best $ can buy at that range. I bet you can fire slugs, but not be that accurate, but a deer has an 8' vital zone to hit, so it depends on how good you are. Second 28" can be used for turkey, but is a bit overkill if you need to swing it around, the weight keeps the gun in motion, good for birds on the move in open areas. Turkey, you are ususally in thick woods and a shorter barrel comes in handy. Check out ellwood epps, i think they had a few Mossburg 500 3 barrel sets for $480ish+ . Only other thing you would need for a rifled cantilever barrel is some kind of sights.

If money is a concern I would recommend the Mossberg 535 2 barrel option. $400-450, 28" barrel with 3 chokes for turkey and birds, and a 24" cantilever barrel for deer. Take the money you saved and put a scope with decent eye relief on the cantilever.

Thanks for the answer guys. I was also looking at the Mossberg and noticed the only difference between 535 and 500 is that the 535 can take a 3.5". Is it worth the price difference for a 535?

Weatherby PA08 is miles ahead of the 870/500 in my opinion, especially with the walnut stock I think its the upland version? I love mine! got the combo with a 28" VR and 24 RS for $499, havent looked back once, solid gun, solid feel, light weight and just all around really really impressed with mine !

Its not worth looking at anything 12Ga 3.5", takes a longer cycle time cause of the longer slide in the action, you also have a bit more of a chance to short shuck it and its a bit of an overkill, i mostly use 2.75 for everything and rarely anything in 3". There is no need for 3.5, if really needed its better for the shot string and pattern to move up to a 10Ga. Just look in stores, tons in stock of 3.5" in everything, 3" and 2.75 seem to move faster but alot more common to find. A weatherby is also a nice gun, i own the SA08 but only thing it only has one barrel that is 28"
