Remington Wingmaster 18.5 inch loaded with rifled slugs was my preffered protection for 2 years when I worked in the BC interior. My Father with a license to carry throughout BC carried a S&W .357 Magnum. Sure it was heavy, but so was the backpack full of rock samples.
I wouldn't trust much else, and would not chep out on a 12 guage when used for protection from predators, and test fired them at least one a week or so.
