Slug Velocity

Agreeing with Bigredd and Gatehouse, I go with 2 3/4" Brennekes.

Not that I have ever had to shoot a raging bear yet, but if I ever have to, why deal with more recoil than necessary?

I did take a bear tag this year, so maybe I'll find out first hand how the
2 3/4" does and report back.

(There's a really nice cinammon running around our area that I might come across).

Italian Sporting goods in Vancouver carries the Brennekes.

I found that, as far as standard foster slugs go, they actually penetrate less on deer at close range. The soft lead at a higher, near muzzle velocity turns the slug into a ragged donut. Basically the slug turns inside out.

I can only recollect a few instances of a slug passing through on any of the ~ 2 dozen deer I have taken of my stand at shots less than 30 m's. Most deer dropped in their tracks, but were not always instantaniously dead. Amazing given the rather small size of our deer.

On the other hand. I have taken only three deer with slugs around 100m's distant. All were pass thru's.

My theory is that less velocity, causes less upset, less resistance in the slug allowing momentum to carry the projectile thru.

Popcan took the words right out of my mouth!

Boomer knows what I prefer too.
I could care less where the best shotgun slugs are made as long as they perform when the chips are down.....buy junk and you die with junk.
(And I am not talking about bambis here)

It sure whistled through that boar I shot.

Brenneke Rotweill slugs are common as apple pie on the Alaskan salmon streams.

When I was in Juneau Alaska in May of 2000 these slugs were literally flying off the store shelves there.

If you do not believe me just use your search engine and check out
"Alaska Outdoor Forums," and see what everyone still walking upright recommends up there.
And let me tell you it's not challengers.

The original Brenneke design was first concepted in 1898, and it's final outcome resulted in the Rotweill slug we are all familiar since EDIT: 1930/1932 according to Stoeger's Catalog.

At the time there was only one slug better, this was also a Brenneke design, and it had a steel tip penetrator for use by German settlers in East Africa to deal with really big dangerous African game.......

You can argue all you want but until Dixie slugs sells/markets itself well internationally....the best has been with us for over 100 years.

Who carries the Challenger slug load in Canada?

SIR lists them. I would'nt mind giving them a try too. I tried reloading my own slugs (Lee Drive Key 1oz slugs), what a pain in the a$$. They shot like $hit. I'm out of Brennekes and am down to 1 1/2 boxes(15pack) of Win. 1oz 2 3/4 Fosters and two packs of 3" Buckhammers.
The Brennekes I had damn near shot into the same hole at 50yds outta my Win.1200 with rifled choke tube:rockOn:
:shotgun:

Challengers are very accurate!!! They are flat-shooting and "fast"!! They penetrate extremely well!!!!! Canadian made at that!!!!! Brenneke's are the same (slightly less accurate in my 1300) but are made by foreign manufactuers!!! I shoot a 1300 short turkey barrel(but with a I.C. choke screwed in) NO SIGHTS.....NO SCOPE....NO CRAP and have drilled deer at from 10 yds to 90yds(they perform just as well at 90 as they do at 10)

Challengers are crap... your testing and your experience with slugs is limited or you would know this already.

I'm glad that I ran into this thread, as I ride with my 870/slug barrel in the scabard when fencing along the forestry. I must sheepishly admit that I figured that a slug is a slug is a slug. So, can I get these Brennekes from Wholesale? any particular type recommended?

Gitrdun my friend, the original RWS made, Brenneke Rotweill are 2 3/4 inch, are in a clear see through plastic hull and brass shell. The 10 round packages I have seen are predominately grey in color with a little green on the front and have an acorn and leaf symbol on the front corner.
On the back is shown a profile of the slug alone and the felt wad is attached to the base.
At the time I bought them at Edmonton Wholesale Sports for about 20 dollars or so in cost for 10 in each package.

They claim the slug is good for smoothore and rifled barrels.
Most people use these slugs in smoothbore shotguns by choice.:)

The packaging used by Brenneke USA has changed recently, and they use a few different names down there to describe the same slug.
Last I paid attention they, in the USA refered to this same slug as the MP slug, short term for the multi-purpose slug....in my view they seem to use different packaging down there.
I could be wrong on that though, I just have personally not seen anything here, with a Brenneke USA label on it.

So I try not to confuse myself as they do not ship to Canada, last I heard anyways.
