I'm just getting into casting bullets in 323 and 308 for 4 different rifles. The the 323s are for 2 bolt action Mausers so slugging is no problem. But the 308s are not sluggable from the chamber and would have to be slugged from the muzzle. Is there any point to slugging from the muzzle? I'm also a bit concerned about jamming the slugs in the barrel when there's no easy way to back them out.

TIA,

Tom

Hello Tom.
I usually do slug from the muzzle.
Here are 2 very helpful youtube vid’ that help.

I do like this guys method of not using a round ball but a soft lead round cylinder.

It has more bearing surface and easy to measure with your calipers.

I also do not always slug the barrel from end to end unless i want to check for narrow spots or lose spots in the barrel.

no need for that unless you suspect an uneven barrel with a narrowing at some point in the barrel and you want to measure the narrowest point.

I usually just tap the slug into the muzzle and go down about 1 inch with a wooden dowel and insert a wooden dowel on the other end to tap it back out.

For a 308 slug mold i sacrifice a few unsized 308 brass and cut them just below the neck.
I place the “neck” on a bit of fine sand on a sheet metal and put a fishing sinker in it and heat it with a torch.
worked very well for me so far.
