Slugs and Choke question

hello all,

Just a quick question on how or if a choke that is mounted in my SX3 will effect a Slug round. The reason Im asking is that instead of taking out my 3030 all the time when hunting duck and deer, I want to just bring a few slugs out with me when in the marsh hunting waterfoul. My plan is the hunt deer in the AM and Duck in the afternoon.

Will it harm by shotgun to fire a slug through the Mod choke tube or should I switch it out for the Cyl Bore tube.

Thanks.

You can fire slugs safely through modified. It will not harm anything. Only a very tight choke such as a turkey choke should be avoided with slugs.

The only caution I would give is to make sure that you're shooting rifled slugs and not sabot slugs. the "rifling" doesn't spin the slug, it's just an area of less material the lets it squeeze through a choke without damage.

A solid sabot slug through a mod choke might not make for a happy day.

other than that, just see how your gun patterns with the different chokes. Most slug boxes I recall reading seem to say that IC tend to be the most accurate.

Accuracy did seem to improve by an inch or two at 30-50 yds out of both my 870 and ksg with an IC choke as opposed to cylinder bore. I've done a lot of research on this and slugs out of mod cylinders on modern guns, etc are fine, though I would never fire one out of a extra full turkey choke. My default is to keep an IC in the gun for when I'm out grousing in case I see a deer, etc, since IC seems to do it all in the density of woods I tend to hunt in. I like to keep a pocket full of #6 for upland birds and small game, and a couple slugs 1oz or 1-1/8" (I love those Score thug-slugs).

update: I'll also keep the mod cyl in my pocket and some black cloud #2 steel for duck and goose. A good shotgun is all you really need, imo :)

Common wisdom suggests that shooting slugs through a modified or even a full choke will not harm the gun, but shooting lots of slugs could have an effect on shot patterns over time. If you pattern your modified barrel with shot, then fire 50 slugs through it, and pattern it again, it might not print a modified pattern. The type of slugs you fire will have some effect on the choke wear, in that a soft foster slug probably won't have the effect that a harder slug, like a Challenger might have. Anyway, if you use screw in chokes, your modified choke could be replaced if/when patterns open up, or you could avoid any potential problems, and just shoot slugs through an open choke.

I can only comment about Carlson"s OPtima HP choke, and very specific on this . Shane Carlson special mentioned to my inquiries that because of the threading of the OPHP choke, strongly advice not to shoot slugs tighter than IC on their OPHP chokes ( Beretta A400 seires, 1301 bbls).
He also mentioned that with Beretta/ Benelli choke even the Crio is fine with modified for slugs, but might not produce a great accuracy, that would be another topic.

Just bought a Carlson's Win choke tube. Interchangable with Browning invector.

Definitely says on the packaging, you shouldn't shoot sabot or rifled slugs thru any choke tighter than Improved Cylinder.

Ordered it from Als Corner Store on a Thursday, they shipped it the next day. I got it the following Monday.

My Winchester 1300 owner's manual says that you can fire rifled slugs thru both IC or Mod chokes, but that best accuracy will result with the IC.

You might want to refrain from carrying anything other then steel loads when waterfowl hunting. If you happen to get stopped by a CO, you'll likely end up with a ticket for an infraction.
