There has been reports of Black bears in the area where I want to hunt Turkeys. Now my problem is my shotty will be set up with a full turkey choke....what is the best load to put through it for a bear encounter? I will be loading #4 Winchester Supreme 3" 1 7/8 shells is that enough? Dumb question but with that choke is there anyway I could put a slug down the pipe? I have a few 2 3/4 inch 1 ounce rifled slugs and I'd like to keep one in the magazine in case I have the chance to use my black bear tag this spring. Recommendations?

Thanks Scallywag.....I kinda sized it up later on and I don't see why they wouldn't work....I want that tight pattern for turkeys but it would be nice to keep a slug in the mag just in case.

I don't know if I'd put slugs through a turkey choke as it is a 2X full choke is it not? I'd be worried about pressure build up. But I guess if you are worried about bear why not take the chance.

All Foster type slugs can be fired through any choke constriction safely. That is actually the function of the raised lead that looks like rifling. It allows the slug to compress somewhat and fit through a tight choke. You have to try YOUR gun, but most shotguns shoot slugs most accurately in a IC choke. since your choke is a turkey choke in THEORY accuracy will suffer and choke wear will be progressively accelerated saying this I wouldnt put more than 60+ slugs a year through it. (I would baby it with slugs but I certinaly would shoot slugs through it if it were my gun)

theres my 2 cents.
