Slugs and deer

so i'm looking at picking up an H+R Pardner shotgun for grouse. but i want to also be able drop a deer if one steps out. i'm thinking 20 gauge. i don't want to start a "best calibre/gauge for deer" argument, i just want to know if this will be adequate. what do you folks think?

Yup...at reasonable ranges with the proper slug of course!

I just saw something you might be interested in on the buy and sell. Listing is in Coquitlam for:

Not sure if this is a good or bad deal but it would certainly cover deer and grouse for you...

interesting BimmerBob. i've heard of over under combo guns, but not with 3 barrels. i think i'll stick with the H+R though. i kinda want to keep things as light as possible.

Yup...at reasonable ranges with the proper slug of course!

what range would you consider reasonable for a slug? i've never hunted with them before. i would figure 50 yards max. rifled, hollowpoint slug.

Just to be clear, the combo handy rifle is a 3 barrel set for one action, ie: all single shots, so they are quite light.

Similar to what you are looking at but with 2 extra barrels

oh ok. gotcha. i can the uses for that since my Mossberg Maverick has interchangeable barrels, but then i'd have to switch barrels between game. i don't think i'd have time to do that. i want to be able to drop in either birdshot or a slug, depending on what's standing in the road, close the action, and BOOM! dinner.

ok. i'll grab the .177 pellet gun, and go deer huntin'.

i'll be sure to practice with it before taking a shot at a deer. it'll be interesting to see how good or lousy a shot i am with a slug. never really done much slug shooting.

At the close-ish ranges you're likely to encounter a deer while grouse hunting, a 20g slug should do just nicely.
