slugs for grizzly?

I fired a 1oz factory 2 3/4" Foster slug in to the carcass of a 6' 8" black bear (no hide). I shot from a foot or two away and hit it straight in the sternum. The soft lead slug flattened out and did not penetrate all that great.

Other informal tests have shown me that pure lead foster style slugs from 2 3/4 shells are right on the threshold of being hard enough to hold their shape and penetrate on anything that is "hard" Some times in some things they do very well, other times not so well.

Any slug that is some what solid and made of hard material will do much better. From what I have gathered the Brenneke is slightly harder than pure lead and not as hollow as fosters.

I have cast hardened 12 bore round balls out of wheel weights that are in the 530g weight range. They penetrate well.

To paraphrase Samual Baker (famous elephant hunter) "A hardened 12 bore round ball under 6 drams of powder will completely exit the head of an elephant" Or something close to that just from memory. The one thing that Baker stressed was that the balls must be "slightly" hardened to achieve good penetration. Run of the mill foster lead slugs are not hard and are hollow to boot.

Fiocci makes a good slug that's very similar to a Brenneke, called the Aeroslug, I believe Italian Sporting Goods carries them.

A dirtback had his rotweiler attack try to attack me a few years back. I hit it from about 3 yards with a foster slug right on the front shoulder. I saw a large chunk of hit fly off, but could immediately tell the slug had just flattened out and did not penetrate. It did make quite an impression on the angry dog and three rounds of SSG quickly settled the matter. I would love to get my hands on a Brenneke. At close range they are THE answer. Now, from 20 yards away, I have seen foster slugs penetrate both sides of a horse, but I think they are just too soft for close up protection.

Pretty sad that you had to kill a dog because of some scumbag. Sorry for the hijack but yeah. I too have noticed that foster slugs penetrate better at range. To a point anyway. I have also noticed Fed's 1 1\4oz slugs tends to turn into a clump of lead rather than flatten right out like 1 oz win slugs do.

I couldn't agree with you more. I absolutely love dogs - and rotty's especially. He was a big beauty, but typical drug dealer guard dog. The guy had his dog attack a small child that got too close to his property the day before as well.

On a different note, I have also tried the Winchester power point slugs. I chronied them out of my 18" Wingmaster and they do reach 1700 fps as advertised. Incredible accuracy for a slug too, but they are only one ounce in weight and at that speed, I think they would just flatten out into a clump of lead. Thanks to this thread, I will be looking for Challengers! I have heard excellent things of them.

I did live in NS, for 18 months recently.....and I noticed in the few really good sporting goods stores, Challengers were available as an alternative to Brenneke.
I personally know that Accuracy Plus in Peterbourough Ontario, will mail out (Brenneke Rotweill) these, when in stock, via DHL.
Saskcop, when I went on a hunt and sighted in the Ithaca, Wichester brand Super X, 2 3/4, were just as accurate, and appeared flatter shooting,(esp:mad:75 & 100yards). But the need for a good penetrating slug, led me to use the first choice, the Brennekes. Of course I could see, certainly, this 'better choice' could easily lead to a liability in your line of work.

Cheers.........
PS: In my shotgun, with iron sites, Brennekes, appeared to myself, to have a drop of 6 inches at 75 yards. On a wild boar, I had a complete through & through. The exit hole was a slightly ragged exit, just about an inch and a half in diameter, while destroying both lungs, and just clipping the heart. Due to deep snowfall, the slug was not recovered. Pig fell & rolled onto back right there, demised in less than one minute. This is my one & only 'big game' harvest with a shotgun & slug.
