I shot one of my moose with a 12ga using Forster type slugs. One shot at 60 yards and the young bull was on his back with all four legs up. A couple of jerks and that was it.
My dad has also taken several using his old Winchester Model 37 single shot 12ga with fixed full choke! He also used Forster type slugs, so the full choke wasn't as big of a problem than if he'd been using a shotgun with screw-in chokes.
At close ranges, a 1oz slug is deadly on Moose, but it wouldn't be my first choice! It just isn't versatile enough, unless I was hunting really thick woods with all shots basically under 75yards and/or snap shots the norm. Then a good pump or semi-auto slug gun with rifled bbl is in its element.
