Slugs for moose??

I shot one of my moose with a 12ga using Forster type slugs. One shot at 60 yards and the young bull was on his back with all four legs up. A couple of jerks and that was it.

My dad has also taken several using his old Winchester Model 37 single shot 12ga with fixed full choke! He also used Forster type slugs, so the full choke wasn't as big of a problem than if he'd been using a shotgun with screw-in chokes.

At close ranges, a 1oz slug is deadly on Moose, but it wouldn't be my first choice! It just isn't versatile enough, unless I was hunting really thick woods with all shots basically under 75yards and/or snap shots the norm. Then a good pump or semi-auto slug gun with rifled bbl is in its element.

Shotguns with slugs are illegal for moose in BC, the 22 Hornet isn't?

Yes, and you can use center fire on Grouse and Ptarmigan only, but use Rim fire on Grouse, Ptarmigan, and TURKEY.

I suspect that the BCWF folks are going to do some upgrades in the near future:

So feel free to direct any questions NOW in their direction.

What the reason behind that?

They were thinking buckshot when the rule came in i believe. Nobody's actually asked to have it changed :)

BTW - i was told by the ministry that RIFLED SHOTGUNS ... are rifles. So a sluggun with sabots would be legal.

Now - i spoke to ONE official about this. I never trust these answers unless i call about three times, talk to different people, and get the same answer :)

But if for some god-unknown reason you're bound and determined to take a slug to moose, i BELIEVE that is legal in a rifled shotgun. Double check.

I had the Exact same argument with several MNR officials about a 12 guage shooting Sabots, and even used the example of a bolt action rifled slug gun used only to fire sabots.

Was told a 12 guage no matter what it shoots is still a shotgun..

My argument was on shell capacity, where a shotgun can hold only 3, where a rifle could hold 5.

I was also told, that if the rule was changed I wouldn't be able to use my slug gun for deer, during a shotgun/ML only season.

That was enough to shut me up, and Not pursue it any further. I'll take my 2000FPS Shotgun and be on my way. :)

Well that's almost exactly the opposite of what i was told.. but it IS a province by province thing. (i was thinking of the mag limit too :) )

And i still don't trust the guy's answer, because he said you could use a REGULAR shotgun for deer and have more than 2 in the tube, but the actual regs clearly say 'shotguns for ANY game.. pinned at two'.

Now - maybe he meant that this reg only means shotgun with shot, but i don't know. I'll have to call back and ask.

I'd sure like to know how your boy figures a rifled barreled firearm shooting a single spinning bullet is anything but a rifle tho :)

Anybody done this?

No doubt at 50 yds this could work , I guess Im just currious as I have never actually had anyone tell me that they have or know of someone who has?
Any stories?:p

A 12 ga is killer on moose. It has tons of stopping power at sub 150 yard ranges. Last moose I shot was with a rifled slug. The liver was hanging out the side of it. Usually is leaves a 2-3 inch hole, so try not to put too many holes in it:rolleyes: Everyone I know uses shotguns for hunting moose. Just keep ranges below 300 yards and it will stop em dead.
