Anybody done this?

No doubt at 50 yds this could work , I guess Im just currious as I have never actually had anyone tell me that they have or know of someone who has?
Any stories?:p

It is illegal to do in BC. Check your regs if you want to try this.

I would guess that a good slug from a 12g placed behind the shoulder on a 50 yard broadside shot would surely equal a dead moose.

when i first started hunting moose, i also took my 12 ga, to shoot duck and partridge. when i decided to go hunt birds i carried slugs with me just in case. i never had a moose show up (actually still haven't) that i had tags for. So i never had to shoot one with slugs. But at short range they would no problem. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot one with slugs up to 75 yards. Considering what i've seen them do to deer out to 150 yards.

Really?

A slug is a lot of vitamen L for the old swamp donkey (more than enough to ruin his day).

What the reason behind that?

Three of the four moose that I have seen taken were shot with slugs.

Two were calfs and one was a cow. Long story short none went more than a half dozen steps.

Soft lead slugs have poor penetration, especially up close. I've shot many small blacktails with them, usually broadside through, or just behind the shoulder and usually recover the remains of the pancaked slug within the animal. Fancy sabot slugs may be a whole different story. Never used them.

I don't know about foster type rifled slug but most sabot slug would do the trick easilly. I shoot winchester partition golds for deer and I'd feel confident with them to about 150 yards maybe 200 if I could shoot that good. They still retain 1700 ft-lbs of energy at 200 yards. Thats about the same as a 30-30 with a 170 grain bullet at 25 yds and look at how many moose have been killed with the 30-30.

I agree that any of these slugs, preferably a sabot slug would be more than adequate for moose. I think it a case of the B.C. laws not keeping up with the technology, go figure.

I guess lots of moose were taken with black powder rifles throwing a led ball, so a shotgun with slugs should work.

True enough...a .50 or .58 Caliber muzzle loader will do the trick.

I saw the head of a young bull taken, head on, from about 20 yards, with a 12ga slug.
The skull was shattered, where the slug hit and the antlers were flopping around.

A 3 inch foster Brenneke will clock any moose out there at 100 yards , maybe to 150 . I haven't used sabot slugs and rifled barrels but i've taken a couple of moose , a couple of deer and a lot of black bears with my 870 using Brennekes . If i was sighted to 150 and the right shot presented itself i wouldn't hesitate . The last moose i shot was a good sized cow at 80 paces and the slug broke both shoulders and dropped it like a sack of hammers . I was going for a side boiler room shot offhand and didn't hit where i intended to . I didn't purposely aim at the shoulder but after seeing the damage i wouldn't hesitate in doing that again either . I have almost no experience with other slugs as i learned bear hunting years ago that the 3 inch Brennekes work so i stuck with them .

<--- Killed with a 12 gauge slug, lungshot, she did'nt make it very far. I fired from about 60 yards. she weighed out at about 90 lbs a quarter dressed. tender as could be.

There's one old timer near me that's been using a cooey single shot 12 guage with ball, not slug, longer than I've been alive. He has killed a lot of moose.

Hey Guys..

Bear Slayer..

I hear ya on the Winchester Partition Golds..
I shoot a 3" PG and it is for sure powerful enough to get the job done...

I'd also say my smoke pole shooting 150 gr Pyrodex with a 240 gr hollow point saboted bullet with all do the trick at a fairly decent range..
