I just got my hand on a Maverick 91, wich is a Knockoff of the Mossberg 500, in supermagnum and with Accu-Mag interchangable chocke (with a Full chocke).

Now on the barrel right next to the chambering (2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2) it's writen "NOT FOR USE WITH SLUGS"

I'm not quite sure of what to make of this as on Mossberg own web site they say:

Slugs may be fired through choke tubes except those with X-Full constrictions or designated "Turkey tubes". Generally, open choke tube constrictions will produce more consistently accurate groups. The "Improved Cylinder" tube is a popular choice for slug shooting.

Wich is not my case.

I'm kind of disapointed because I wanted to go Deer hunting with this gun. So is it just some warranty nullifing clause or can it damage de gun or even be dangerous to fire slug?

It's marked "NOT FOR USE WITH SLUGS". Pretty clear to me they don't want you to use slugs in that barrel.

Refer to page 17 of your manual approx 1/2 way down the page (or download it here : http://www.mossbergs.com/manuals/Maverick_88_91.pdf). The 91 barrel is "overbored" like the Mossberg 835 (which also is not to be used for slugs) which would allow a slug to "rattle" down the barrel and possibly jam, rather than travel smoothly. In a nutshell yes, it could be dangerous.

Get yourself a rifled slug barrel and be done with it. Much better accuracy and you know the barrel was/is designed for slugs.

Well I know that they clearly dont'want me to use slugs, but what puzzled me is that the user manual refer to slugs (saying that you can fire slugs in any chocke contriction except X-full and Turkey) and that the gunsmith who sold it to me made it clear I could deer hunt with it...

The question then was more, would I be taking a risk of blowing up the gun in my face, or would I just void the warrenty?

I would have to say its not worth it to try. To bring a 1 oz. slug to a stop from 1600+ fps would not be a gentle experience, and certainly wouldnt leave your barrel in any useable shape. Sounds like the Maverick Model 91 is based off the Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag, so you may need an 835 Ulti-mag barrel, should you choose to re-barrel. The Maverick Model 88 is based off the Mossberg 500, and will accept 500 barrels, plus the 835 ulti-mag barrel is available with a cantilever for a scope. The part in your manual that talks about slugs through chokes is referring to the choke tubes only, not the overbored barrel. Your gunsmith was correct, You could hunt deer with it. But only with buckshot. The overbored barrel would make a nice tight pattern downrange, just dont try to put slugs through it. Hope this helps

The 91 and 88 share a common manual. Refer to page 17!!! The 91 has an overbored barrel and uses accu-mag chokes (larger diameter), the 88 has a standard bore. REFER to page 17 of the manual!!

Yes you can hunt deer with buck shot or as I mentioned before get a deer barrel.

It's up to you if you want to ignore the manufacturer's warning.

I'm not that eager to win a darwin awards, I was mostly amazed by what I percived as differents information.

Anyway thanks for clearing it up
