A fellow hunter told me here in ontario his uncle last year was hunting quails and was stopped and searched by a CO, he brought a few slugs along in his pocket in case he ran into a bear for defence only since it was not bear season, his shotgun was only loaded with bird shot and he was givin a $375 fine for possesing the slugs, is this right? Thanks

Here it is, right from the regs:

Firearms
In an area where there is an open gun season for deer,
moose or black bear, if you are the holder of a small game
licence you may not possess or use a rifle of greater
calibre or projectile power than a .22 calibre rim-fire rifle
chambered to .22 short, .22 long or .22 long rifle cartridges
or shells loaded with ball or with shot larger than No. 2 shot
(or if using non-toxic shot, you may not use steel shot larger
than triple BBB steel shot, or bismuth shot that is larger
than double BB bismuth shot), unless you possess a valid
licence to hunt deer, moose or black bear as the case may be.

Yup, that's the law in most jurisdictions. Of course, my Old Uncle Ernie used to keep one stuck down the side of his boot anyway ..... just in case he ran into a rabid bear or the like.

Might have gotten fined because you can't hunt Bobwhites in Ontario.

Can the COs just stop and search your person anytime they want? Or do they need rpg similar to a cop?

IMHO The CO,s actually have more powers to search than LEO,s..they can search you or your vehicle and even come in your residence and search without a warrant

Yeah I was aware of the warrantless searches. But is it common for them to do a person search and go through your pockets? Has anybody had this done merely by meeting a CO in the bush?

^If you see the CO are you suppose to run like hell or you get a body cavity search?

You're either full of crap and looking to stir the pot, or mistaken

1. We have no quail season in Ontario (meaning he would have been poaching)

2. Black bear seasons open either concurrently or before grouse, pheasant, partridge seasons (meaning he would have been poaching)

Most of us dont set out to break any game laws....we all go out to have a stress free day, a walk on the wild side with a gun.:p

It just seems right being a Canadian to go out hunting, plinking or target shooting.... and I sometimes feel guilty for not getting out as much as I should.

Co's are good guys and are there to protect game... fair enough, but be careful what you say cause they seem to be judge and jury of the bush.

They can find you guilty of the simplest things, and know you wont fight charges if you live 500 kms away. so the petty fines are around one or two days pay and most just give up and pay.

Not bad really, if you think you talked youre way into being buds with a co.:D
