Just wondering if it would be ok to shoot slugs from my JC Higgis Model 20-12 GA?

It comes with 3 removeable chokes I assume when fireing slugs it would be best to remove the choke all together.

If it is ok to fire slugs from this shot gun what slug would you recommend. Main use would be bear protection.

Your modified or improved cylinder tubes would work best if those tubes are with the gun and i would assume you'd have one of them.Any rifled slug.brenneke or foster style is fine.If you can find a rifled choke tube you can use sabots. Do not fire your gun with anything , whether it be slugs or bird shot ,without a tube in the barrel.

The 3 chokes I have are labeled Short, Medium, and Long Range. Which one would be best for Slugs?
 
My JC Higgins model 20 has the original factory choke system which is an old screw-in choke system that mounts forward of the barrel in what looks like a vented tube. The chokes are marked, Short Range, Medium Range and Long Range. I've not seen any choke tubes manufactured today that would work in that old system. And I have also found the plastic wads used today foul up in the gap between the end of the barrel and the start of the choke tube (there is an open space between end of the barrel and where the chokes start). The old cardboard and felt wads never gave me any problem.
Mine is strictly a disabled training gun now because it started to unlock upon firing the heavier loads. Its an old, weak shotgun with few if any parts available if it breaks. Slugs are going to pound that old gun pretty hard.
 
I should have read your message fully. You want to use it for bears? Do yourself a favour, buy a Remington 870 with something like a 20" - 24" barrel and hang that old Sears gun over the fireplace somewhere. A new 870 is less than $400 and will WORK when you need it most.

Your short range tube would be the best for slugs. The new 870 idea is probably the way to go.If your just defending yourself against bears , no big deal whatever choke you use. If your going to run a lot shots with slugs, loosen up and get the 870.
 
What you have on the end of your blaster is a genuwine Cutts compensator. Go to the Lyman web site, they are still made and will ship to Canada. The Cutts is a good choke system for slugs as there intrinsically cannot be a pressure buid-up upstream of the choke. The compensator reduces felt recoil by 20-30%, an added bonus. Off-hand, I would guess that your JCH would likely be a contracted gun made by High Standard. If the top of the receiver has a square hole to accept the bolt locking lug, you have indeed got a HS. Excellent, well-built guns up to any modern load. Also, just as reliable as a comparably maintained 870.
