Yep slugs for sure, I don't think you're going to find many people here that are going to advocate buckshot especially in a pump action as you've indicated you have. Now on an semi auto maybe buck would be ok if you had to get off another shot on a pissed Grizzly... but for me if I was in bear country only serious slugs and likely 3" ones at that.
I remember seeing the full half-hour episode on tv... the guide drew his pistol (.44 mag) as soon as they saw the cubs. They had rifles aboard too, but they were buried in gear in the bottom of the boat.
A pissed off grizzly is sure something to behold. A sow (three cubs but older) screamed at us once in a similar type scenario except we were about 200 feet away not right in our face like that deal. Made my hair stand up even at that distance. Best defence in bear country is do not spook them. Lot of opinions on what ammo is most effective, bottom line is getting the shot off. Hit them in a vital area with a slug, it will do the job. To do that you need to practice with whatever you choose to be effective at a short distance. That video is an excellent example showing how a pleasant little drift down a river can turn around in a split second. No time to think, just react.

You want 23/4 inch brenneke,challenger or dduplecks loads. You want something hard thats easy enough on the recoil to recover from, so its accurate to put all your rounds in the oncoming extremely fast target. Practice on a fast moving target and youll see what i mean.
Where do you guys source slugs from? I only ever see soft Foster type slugs and the like, locally and online. Never any of the more hardened, dangerous game type stuff like the Brenneke, Deep Penetrator, Challenger, Terminator, etc sort of slugs. Or the Solid copper ones either. Do I have to get my shop to special order a bunch or are there any canadian suppliers that stock the stuff?
Only time I have ever used a Foster was slaughtering a youngish cow for beef. From point blank range, 18 inch barrel, looking down from above, between the eyes. The people butchering it still found a bunch of separated chunks of deformed lead inside the head, some large bits hadnt even gone all the way through. Would like something that retains it's weight and doesnt blow to pieces going through like 8 inches of cow(albiet through a bit of bone). It obviously killed it instantly, but not a fan of the chunks of lead going everywhere, would much rather the slug blasts a large clean hole through and then all of it goes out the other side into the dirt.
Mostly for that purpose, but also eventually for carrying out in the woods, in case of bears, etc.
So where do you source these nice non foster slugs?

Doesn't anybody else reading this thread just shudder at the absolute stupidity of Cdn law!? Here we are in the woods, miles from civilization and not only can we not have a handgun on us but if it's bow only we can't even have a shotgun present for self defence??? Had coffee with 3 guys in Kelowna in the early 90's on their way toChristian Valley for Elk....Saw them next on the news from the helicopter shot from above, eaten/attacked/killed by a bear as they were cleaning their Elk with the long-guns still leaned against a tree. Good laws, really keeping the public safe in my opinion!
