I have been looking for a nice 1897 winchester pump for a while just because I like them and think there cool. I want to shoot it and I like the way the cowboy cut downs look, so likley going to pick up a number mismatch with a cut down barrel. I also want to look cooler than the guys I shotgun hunt deer with and all there modern plastic stock shotguns. If I use 2 3/4" 1oz slugs in a 1897 will I still look cool after I trip the trigger on a big buck or will that be overshadowed by the dripping blood and gun parts scattered around me? Any input would be appreciated.

my winchester 1897 was once a long barrel take down which was trimmed down to a 20" riot clone (no choke now ) many moons ago and have shot fed rifled slugs through it on numerous occasions with no ill effects (only sore shoulder ).

Is the question whether or not the 1897 will safely shoot 2 3/4 inch 1oz slugs?

I hunted with a norc copy and liked the gun - action's a little more prone to getting junk in it if you push bush while hunting, but that's about it.
I'd also consider when the gun was made, what the chamber size is, and how long the forcing cone is. I'm not super familiar how the 1897 series developed over time, but there are more than a few kinds of shotgun with odd length chambers or short/long forcing cones that could cause premature wear or damage with the wrong size hulls.

H Wally hit the nail on the head they are all over the place on the forcing cone, you would want to get checked out by some one competent. My 1910 was adjusted sometime in it's life and feeds 2 3/4 target loads just fine, and that is good by me it is fun to shoot that way.

Standard 2 3/4" foster style rifled slugs are not a new invention. People have been shooting them in shotguns for almost as long as there have been shotguns. Before that they were shooting round balls in shotguns. go have some fun.
