He fellas with the arrival of Black bears in southern ontario just wondered about carrying a couple of slugs with me into the turkey woods but am concerened about shooting it through the super full choke...
Good question.... I have never tried it... not likely to ever try it either.
Good possiblity of damaging the barrel and tube witht he really tight tubes.
I think a turkey load would kill a bear at very close range.... it's worth a try if the circumstances call for it. You probably would not have time to change up to slugs anyway.
Usually the with turkey choke it not recommended for sluggs due to the constrictionof the barrel. You'll most likely damage your choke and bulge your barrel as stated before. I know mosseberg website says no to slugs in turkey barrels.
After pulling the trigger you will be shooting a lot like Buckshot with the slug going one way and the choke and other barrel parts going another. Don't even try it . If you leave the bears alone , They will leave you alone ...BT
But if they dont, or you do have the opportunity to cross some coyotes while turkey hunting, I use #4 buck, and have shot it out of an undertaker choke without problems.
Yeah, just put a few rounds of 00 Buck (3") in your pocket. I personally would like to have more than one projectile travelling toward the bear. Especially in a 'panic' situation.
why not 000 Buck? What I would do if you couldn't safely run a slug through your barrel, then again, I am not so certain eather would be safe? Best finding out through the manufacter of your firearm to play it safe.
Many people hunting in bear country also tend to load their last round as eather a slug/buckshot. This way if you know for sure your life is in danger it is there in your gun ready to fire =)
I don't worry about bears too much. If he comes at me he's getting three turkey loads in the head, and at 10 yds, the pattern is tight enough to do the damage, then run if it doesn't!
Two years ago while turkey hunting I had my decoys out, and at the left of the field I see 2 deer coming across. They walked up and sniffed my decoys, then the buck (he had stumps, looked like 2 soup cans on his head) follwed my scent right to me . At 5 feet, he stopped and stared me down for 2-3 minutes, then I got worried he'd stomp me, but he walked away and jumped the fence. I wish I had that on film!
