Slugs through modified choke?

I have an 870 and was curious if fireing rifled slugs through it was safe?


its a 870 express modified choke 28 inch barrel.

Yes it is I have been shooting slugs through mod and full choke for years no problem.

They may tend to print a little high.... at least that was my experience.

Is that due to the longer time it takes to get through the narrower choke and leave the barrel?

I've always gone by the rule that if a dime can fit through the choke, it's ok for non-toxic shot and slugs.

There are a number of folks who actually find that a fixed modified choke actually shoots slugs better than a Cyl bore...

Even a conventional full choke can be safely used with slugs. Only extra-full chokes should not be used with slugs.

If you have a barrel with choke tubes, it may even be worth your while to experiment. My 870 with a rifle sighted 20" barrel shoots slugs better with the modified choke than with improved cylinder.
